Mexican Standard Fretless Jazz?

Hello Everyone,

Was trolling my local L&M the other day and ran into a Mexican Standard fretless jazz. It has the same string spacing as my A4 Fretless and felt very comfortable. I'm curious if anyone has experience with these things? I've never owned a Mexican Standard before, as back when I was actively buying guitars the American Standards were pennies more than the Mexican ones are now. I'm most interested in the Pau Ferro model as I think it's typically a bit harder than RW (I will be keeping flats on it so not a big deal either way). The finishing on the bass seemed fine. Only thing I noticed is that the fret slots were cut deep enough so all the fret lines had a gap under them. Not a huge issue as it's purely visual. I play progressive rock/metal mostly in drop D if that matters so I'm looking for something with a nice growl. The A4FL has been doing great, but it is prone to feedback at stage volumes (I run a bass BB Preamp at mid gain levels).

Thanks everyone :)

Hi.

I bought a fretless Mexican Jazz bass back in 2001, and kept it for about 2 years.

Black, white pick guard, rosewood board.

It was a nice instrument; the craftsmanship was good, and the pickups sounded good, but they did have 60 cycle hum.

If the quality is still the same, I would buy another one.

I’ve got 2, one with SCN pickups, passive with series /parallel push pull, GHS Precision Flats , the other with Di Marzio Model Js and John East Retro J Preamp and GHS Black Tapewounds.(sadly discontinued) No single coil hum issues here and love the tone and playability of these basses.

Mine both have rosewood boards and I’ ve never had a Pao Ferro board on anything so can’t speak to that.

I have a mexican standard fretless. Its nice enough. Fretboard is rosewood on mine.
I refinished the neck on mine with tung oil, which i feel was a vast improvement. And the nut has been replaced, as the original one broke under the E string.

As mentioned, the stock pickups do produce 60 cycle hum.
And overall, for the price, mine seems like a great value.
My fretless seems nicer than my other MIM fenders ive owned. Might be that there is less work that needs done to the frets?
