I have a Hartke Kickback 12 (1 12 inch speaker, 120 watts) and I have been told I could only get away with it at small gigs because of lack of volume compared to the loud guitars and drummer. I have seen amps mic'ed before but how does that work? Would that make me be able to play big gigs with that not so loud amp? and when I mic it how loud do I put the amp volume knob? please respond... thanks..

Your answer depends a lot on how loud the band plays and how much they want to hear you elsewhere on the stage. I have been using a 30-watt Ampeg B-15N on some pretty large gigs lately, but my band isn't insanely loud onstage.
So micing it...turn it up to the point where it's comfortable for you onstage. You can also DI it, which turns your cab into a stage monitor. I greatly prefer micing these days, but DI is also a good way to go. And a blend of the two is cool.
It's not unreasonable to use that Hartke onstage, but again, it all depends on how loud you want to be.
