Micro rig!

Here she is: a 2001 GK 400RB-III running at 8 ohms (150 watts) into a 2005(ish) Low Down Sound neo 1x8 3-way.

The sound is tremendous for the size. The mids are very, very clear and accurate, and the low end is massive at low volumes (at high volumes, the low end diminishes somewhat). The tweeter is a bit harsh when it's full on, but from 25%-50%, the top is really balanced. I EQ the amp flat with the presence off, and the cabinet can take all the amp can dish out.

The cabinet weighs 20 pounds, 25 tops, and the head is 15. I have an old laptop bag that the head fits perfectly in, and the cabinet is a breeze to carry.

My only concern is that I'm GASing for a Focus or maybe a WT550 to replace the GK ... but that's down the line. For now, here she is in her 35 pound glory:

Two more for size reference: the first is with my modded fretless Jazz (the Plow), and the second is with my vintage Bassman 100 and LDS 2x12 / 2x6.

That 1X8 looks very cool. Can it hold up to a (non-psycho) drummer in a small to medium venue?

Have you had a chance to play out with the Yamaha rig yet? I have been on the fence about buying some of that gear lately.

Gassing a bit - especially since I am no longer able to even move my old rig, nevermind take it out of the house.

I'll let you know in a few days, when I have a little jam session with my drummer buddy. He's playing a small Gretsch kit these days with an 18" bass drum, but he plays pretty loud on his bigger kit, so we'll see.

I've played jazz with a fender 200 watt 14" speaker combo, playing with a dummer with the same gretsch kit. I acutally only had the amp up about halfway most of the time. This is my school's rig, and I've used it for jazz combos and also the big band shows.

Just today I played through an swr clalifornia blonde, playing rock with a stingray and competing with a drummer with a ludwig kit and guitarist through a marshall combo.

I'm sure the mini rig will hold up.

Have you had a chance to play out with the Yamaha rig yet? I have been on the fence about buying some of that gear lately.

Not with the 2 cabs as yet. I did a gig with one cab paired with an Avatar 2x10 cab and it sounded really nice although I did miss the 'boominess' of my usual rig of a 2x10+1x12 but it was loud enough and articulate enough to cut through 2 loud guitars and a hard hitting drummer!

If you're gonna spring for it, now's the time as MF is blowing them out due to the line being discontinued (poor sales I gather).

Basically all I need the rig for is practice and playing with acoustic guitarists. If it works with a drummer, it's money very well spent.

UPDATE:

It holds its own, barely, against a loud-ish drummer and a jam pad (9 drum pads with loops). The lows start to drop off at higher volumes, but it doesn't break up at all. Not bad for a 20 pound cabinet.

The small LDS cabs are very impressive, I've been known to get very loud with a 3 X 8. My current 2 X 10 UL is almost as loud as my old Eden 410 with my WT 550. Are you in Muskegon or Chicago? I get thru Muskegon every couple of months for business.
