Mid Range box with crossover - thoughts?

I don't really want more mids, just better dispersion. not a critical thing, just seeing what options were out there.

Your talking DIY, so the options are essentially limitless if you have enough money to throw at it. ;)

oh i know passinwind is in the club, i always like it when i get a bunch of them together and they fight...

I could just wrassle with my inner demons for a while here until someone else comes along ready for a spat.

In all seriousness, those BE cabs would not make my short list for this sort of project. They're more or less all midrange to begin with, but maybe something like a Faital 5 incher (or two) would give you a little more spread to the high mids without castrating the Bag End-ness?

I was thinking the same thing. In order to maximize the effect you're after, a bottom box designed for some serious low end would lend itself better to the application. That Peavey TVX15 might be better, and the Carvin 1x15 cabs are reported to be a properly designed and sized cab (this according to GB).
Of course, having a superior low end driver such as a 3015LF will increase the effectiveness of the whole system as well.

I built a little mid / x-over box to see if I would benefit from a mid driver. I used the Eminence LA6-CBMR and their 800 Hz x-over. To be honest I didn't notice a major change in my sound, though I was careful to measure the response and make sure it was functioning.

It gathers dust. Maybe one of the new lightweight mid drivers would rekindle my interest.

i get that the compact series BE cabs aren't the best candidate for such a build. Just poking around. FWIW, in their older series cabs they used to put 5" drivers in with a 15", but the cab had no internal crossover and was meant to be run biamped. I also wonder if a couple of fives might be more the ticket.

@passinwind, the peavey is 24"w,27"h,20"d, just under 7cf vol, 79lbs with the sheffield driver. I know this will still be a heavy bulky cab in comparison with a fearful 15/6, however i thought it may make a great sounding stand alone midrange cab like the fearful.

That might work pretty well then, if you're willing to do some homework. What size and format is/are the port(s)?

the port is a simple 6" diameter round port cut into the front,no baffle. would the 3015lf work with this? i am trying to figure out the wins speaker program

You will need to add a port tube at the very least. You could maybe cover it over and install more convenient ports for tuning, using one of the standard sizes for port tube diameter. Assuming ~5 cu ft actual internal volume and 43 Hz tuning, you're looking at something like a 4" long tube, but the air velocity will be much higher than ideal though, and I'd be tempted to just put in a shelf port sized like a fEarful one.

Before WinISD comes into play you'll need to suss accurate net internal cab volume. With that big of a cab you might even end up wanting to fill some of the space with hard foam or whatever. How low do you need to go? Standard-tuned 4 or 5 stringer, or ???

i do plat a 5er some, but mainly a 4. i use this cab with a 210 when its needed so i was mainly trying to improve this cab to use on its own. this cab goes low enough for me now however is very boomy on its own, it sounds great with the 210 to add some mids and highs so i thought adding a mid to this cab itself might improve the sound.

i would use the current 6" port for the mid location and install a new correct port once i fgure out the size and tube length needed. i prefer not to put in a shelf port because it would be a muh more extensive alteration of the cab, if it gets into to much alteration i might as well build a fearful.

OK, but that's a bit outside of the point of this thread. ;)

PM me if you need a little help with WinISD once you measure the inside dimensions of the cab.

You're also going to need to build a sub-chamber for the 6...
