I have no clue what I'm doing. Anyone really good with midi?

My son bought me a m-audio oxygen pro 61 for Christmas and I have been trying to connect it to Reaper with no luck. I just seem to be making it worse. I've tried several youtube videos and follow them, but it still doesn't work.

The controller shows up in the input but doesn't do anything when I press the keys.

I really need someone to walk me through it one step at a time I guess. Or recommend a site that could help me.

Your controller doesn't make sounds on it's own; you'll need something else as a tone generator.

Here's a video that explains some of this stuff. Your controller will be similar to the Arturia Keylab 88/MIDI Keyboard 88.

I read on m-audio.com that the keyboard has some bundled software included (downloaded, not inside the box). They list 2 virtual instruments - one is an acoustic piano, the other is a synthesizer. I'd start with one of those for a tone generator.

I'm a Logic user, not Reaper, but AFAIK Reaper doesn't include it's own virtual instrument (software tone generator), so you'd need to add one (or more).

Apparently there is no 5-pin MIDI connector, only USB, so you can't plug it directly to a hardware tone generator, such as a Roland Integra-7.

Right click in the empty space and select "Insert Virtual Instrument on New Track"

A menu will pop up with all of your plugins.

Select 'Instruments' and load anything that is labeled 'VSTi' or 'VSTi3'
