Mike Dirnt Precision Bass? Shall I?

I HAVE OWNED A HOPPUS , and i sold it for a profit bought a MIM p bass and put quarter pounds in it and it sounded close to the hoppus, i then remembered his had more sustain cuz its string through ......so i added a gotoh 201 , and had warmoth make me a custom pick guard with only a volume hole no tone just like on the hoppus so basically it sounds and has almost the same setup as his bass

i say you probably dont sound like him do to the fact he is using a nice ampeg OR you losing some sustain at the bridge .......save your money get a decent used ampeg and put a gotoh 201 on your bass and you'll get close to marks tone without playing his sig.

i just did not like the looks of his bass plus the fact i wanted me own sig:)

That schecter is awesome, but theres none in the UK that i can see.

Im trying to weigh out the whole neck thing, if it would annoy me or not.

Maybe the Fender highway one basses would be something to look into as a step up from a MIM.

Any suggestions?

The lack of tome control might have something to do with it... the pickup in the Hoppus is closer to the neck that a standard P-Bass, too.

As far as Dirnt Basses, my friend has a white one and loves it... when he was shopping for a P-Bass we went to four stores in one day, and the nicest bass we played that day hands down was a particular one at Guitar Center. It played better than the other MIA, MIM and CIJ ones we tried... I think it was a magic one, but he didn't want black. :)

Try a bunch, and buy the one that speaks to you.

doesent sound bad at all. The hoppus basses have really weird finishes if you ask me. They discontinued the olympic white+black scratchplate which i would have gone for straight away.

Im wondering about getting a highway one P as it's not MIM etc.

Not sure though, this bass looks like it'll get my sound.

I have a Mike Dirnt P-bass and I love it.

Why? Because:

1.- It´s big. I mean, I have big hands and large fingers, so most of the basses I´ve tried felt like I´m playing a guitar neck instead of a bass, so this one has a nice and "chunky" neck for my hands.

2.- Sound. Very agresive and punchy sound, and lots of sustain thanks to the Badass II bridge. Nice for punk, hard rock or metal, may be too much for a jazz or pop. But, Hey!, it´s a P-bass!

3.- Looks. Love its ´51 style. The pickguard is kinda cheap looking, but there are many aftermarket high quality p/g you can find on ebay, or you can cover it with your favorite stickers.

Cons:

1.- Heavy. If you don´t like heavy basses or you are a small person, this bass could be really unconfortable for you. I use a 3-inch padded strap that works for me.

2.- Not the fastest neck around.

It´s a good bass, maybe not the P-bass everyone wants or will love, so I would recomend you to play one before make your choice.

Actually they didn't discontinue that finish :) I bought a white one with a black pickguard new from musiciansfriend last week.

Hopefully i'll be trying out the Dirnt Sig tomorrow, aswell as the highway one. The shop im going to also has a used american standard P for £599! thats a steal!

The moment of truth comes tommorow then! I'll relay my opinions back to you guys. :bassist:

My .02 after owning a Mike Dirnt for about a year and gigging my High School Jazz and Pep bands with it,

Pros:
-It sounds AWESOME. Punchy, agressive, in your face, P-bass goodness. You can also dim the tone knob and get a rather smooth, very workable R&B style tone.
-It looks pretty sleek. I had the Black model, never failed to get complimented on the looks.

Cons:
-It's heavy. REALLY heavy. That's a slab ash body you're playing with. Not for the faint of shoulder.
-The neck is SUPER thick. Wide to boot. I have pretty giant hands and it's barely comfortable enough to gig around with. I'd assume regular/more petite individuals might want to work out their hands a bit before gigging with this bass.

I'd say the pros outweigh the cons. Then again, I'm 6'1 with a grappler's build. YMMV.

i had a dirnt bass for about 3 days, long enough for me to play it a few times, try to do a setup on it, and found the truss rod to be broken, so i returned it. i ended up going with a CIJ '51 reissue, which i absolutely love. the neck is more playable on it (at least to me), it still has an ash body (although not slab, i think it's a three piece), and it doesn't have the BAII bridge, which i'm not a fan of.

that said, hoppus doesn't have a tone pot, which affects the tone. remove the tone pot (or just remove the capacitor on your existing tone pot - this is what keeps the brightness down), and you might end up getting a closer representation of what you're looking for.

+1 to all of that. I owned a Dirnt Sig until very recently. Mine was excellent, with good construction and a ballsy P-bass tone. The neck was thick, but I still found it to be comfortable. It was, in truth, much better than the MIM P and the highway one P that I've also owned.

If I were you, I'd a.) buy used, and b.) try before you buy. Fender (unless it's Fender japan) does not have good QC.

Keep in mind that a large part of that classic punk tone is coming from the amp, which 9 times out of 10 is an ampeg SVT. A sansamp is a cheap way of getting close to that sound, so you might try a BDDI or a VT bass before spending your money on a new instrument.
