Mike porcaro better than Gene Simons?

I don't think someone has to be on the same level as an artist to criticize them, but i do think that it might be fair to have achieved something before completely dismissing someone. Kiss have sold over 100 million albums worldwide I figure the poster should just sell one million CDs if he wants to so flippantly dismiss them.
In order to apply this logic consistently: We should also disregard the praising of Kiss by anyone who hasn't sold a million records, too, right? I mean, they're clearly just as unqualified to pass judgment. Let's just go ahead and shut down the Bassists forum now.;)

Maybe part of the problem with the 'chippy' nature of many of the posts in this lovely thread is the absence of qualifying terms like IME, or IMHO, or YMMV. Please allow me to demonstrate.

Gene Simmons is an OK bassist, IMHO, but had a knack for writing tunes/basslines that had an obvious appeal to many, as evidenced by his bands significant record sales, and live performance popularity, which seems to be kickin' even today. He also appears to have inspired many to play the bass guitar which, IMO, is noble. Do I listen to or own KISS material? No, I don't, because it doesn't appeal TO ME. As far as it's appeal to someone else I have no opinion . IMO Mike Porcaro is a very talented bassist who has contributed to many recordings in popular music, and has worked in the industry as a studio/touring musician because of his abilities, including working for Mr. Simmons. Interestingly enough, I do not own any of Totos material, and possess some of Mr. Porcaros recordings only as a matter of consequence when purchasing a Steely Dan recording or two.

I don't 'hate' or 'love' one or the other. Nor do any of my preferences regarding these fine gentlemen have anything to say about anyone else or their personal preferences.

I cannot disparage anyones' likes or dislikes, for I don't know you and even if I did, my likes are mine and yours are yours, and we should agree to let each other have our own opinions in peace.

The last thing we need to do is take any of this personally, after all it isn't about any of us, is it?

Hugs and fist bumps for all! :D

It doesn't offend me at all, it's just a very un-original thought and a knee -jerk reaction.

Fenderfunker, you're right, I do sometimes get caught up in the money side of music because it's how I pay my bills and feed my kid. Someone who only does it as a hobby has the luxury of being a purist and being judgmental about successful players. I think that's a cop- out a lot of times, a justification for why people give up on their dreams: "well, I never really wanted to be successful at this. I just want to do my own thing. I'm not gonna compromise and do what it takes to succeed at this, I have my integrity."

Now you sound bitter because you are in a situation of having to play any crap that comes along for $$$$$$.
Also, you extrapolated/assumed all that, when my point was merely that money and talent do not equate to the same thing. :eyebrow:

Alright, let's just call it. You and I officially cannot communicate because you take everything I say to mean something else. Your first sentence above is wrong and not what I said at all. Should I ever find myself in NSW Australia, I look forward to not having a beer with you. But thanks for cluing me into that whole money/talent equation. Anything else super duper obvious you'd like to point out?

Well, I defy anyone to listen to this and then say with a straight face that it really was Simmons on the early recordings:

Quit spreading propoganda, dammit.

He wrote his own damn basslines for the first 6 albums, he played on them all. That solo was not intended to be a show of talent, he was trying to get the crowd going, is all. While it is true that he had ghost musicians during the 80s(he had a movie career going at the time) playing his parts, that is NOT true of the 70s, and how you can tell is because in the 80s, all the parts were roots, and Gene does NOT play roots. It's been documented, and proofed that Gene DID, in fact, play on ALL of the early albums. Why is it so hard to believe that Gene didnt play on any of the early albums if he can play those lines live?? Oh, that's right, because he doesn't solo like all of you jazz snobs....he doesn't need to, he plays rhythmic, catchy, walking basslines that fit KISS's music perfectly.

Granted, that was a bad solo, but one bad solo doesnt make 35 years of good playing go away.

And as for Gene not inspiring anybody with his playing.....he inspired me, I play bass becuase of the guy.

And by the same token, as you all state that fame does not equal talent, neither does complexity or speed, sorry. I could sit for 2 hours and play with my fingers on by bass, or slap and pop mindlessly, but it equates to nothing for me, it sounds like garbage. However, I admit I could never write a bassline as catchy as Goin Blind, or 100,000 Years, or Strutter.

I'll bet you didnt watch those videos AT ALL, either.

Someone help me out here, please??(Jimmy)

You people disgust me.

Spreading false information about ghost players when you have no idea what you're talking about.:scowl:

Sorry, my blood starts boiling when people(RE: jazz snobs) say crap like this about him.....I mean, I wouldn't be playing bass had it not been for the bassline in Goin Blind.....

And no, maybe fame doesnt equal talent, but apparently someone forgot to tell all these people that Gene is no good, and I'm willing to bet that a good 10% of those people were inspired by Gene to pick up bass....
