Mikro or SX....

I did some research on both basses and am looking for a budget sort scale bass. I can't do any mods and would have to get someone to do them for me. I'd have about $400 to spend. What would be better for mods and stuff....is the mikro or SX better out of the box?

I'm not familiar with Mikro, but not all SX require mods out of the box. They are good platforms for it if you choose to do that, but its not always necessary. If you aren't pleased with your SX, you can easily return or exchange it. Will Mikro do that?

Rondo only has a 7 day return policy for a refund. 30 days for an exchange. MF, Zzounds, have the 30 day return policy for exchange OR refund. AMS and Music123 have a 45 day one. Personally, I think I'd go with them.

What I was referring to specifically, was if the OP got shipped one that he/she deemed to be 'defective' in some way (as apparently sometimes happens). That assessment would probably be made very quickly. If someone is looking to evaluate an instrument over time and then decide whether its a keeper, then yes, the big boy online retailers might be the better way to go. I have no clue what a Mikro is.

Hi mizmor.

The [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] has a scale length of only 28.6".

The minimum scale for a decent-sounding E string is 30".

The SX shorty P's, J's, and Jaguar-esque basses all have a 30" scale length and thus will yield a tone with more bone.

If you buy an SX (or anything else) via Invalid Link Removed, Brian will do the quality control verification, minor upgrades, and set-up required to supply you with an affordable, pro-playing bass right out of the case.

Actually, you cannot return you SX in some international shipping cases. I'm in Brazil, and I've just ordered a SX. If it's broken or something, there`s nothing I can do.

But I believe (hope) that won't be the case!

Got a physical justification for those numbers? Please, let's not spread disinformation in the way of helping. This has been done to death in other threads; it's a personal thing and really the OP needs to listen for him/herself.

Thanks all. I didn't see all the replies until now. I may look into the SX a little more. I was going to get the mikro, but the SX sounds like a good deal as well.....still undecided. Is the SX better for slapping?

I have both. I respectfully disagree about the E string. I think it sounds fine. I agree that the fit and finish is slightly better with the Mikro, but it didn't take much for me to make the SX into a good player with a truss rod and saddle adjustment.

I think the biggest question first is what type of tone do you want? The Mikro is still very much a modern sounding PJ bass akin to its bigger Soundgear cousins. The SX is still very much a jazz with a more traditional vibe.

IMHO, answer that question first before you choose which bass. Please look at post #74 and see which tone you like better. HTH.

Thanks Gassieball. The Mikro seemed to have a crisper sound to me compared to the stock SX. And the SX with the DiMarzio Area J was a little too crisp for me. The Mikro seemed to be a nice "in-between" of the 3. Thanks!

I have the Ibanez "Mikro"(black.) As soon as i took it out of the box,i turned it into a "piccolo" bass. The stock Ibanez bridge is good(has some mass to it...keeps intone well.)and the p-ups sound great. The D'Adddy pic-strings are right-on...but i use a GHS "Boomer" .024 gage wound string,cause i didnt like the way the plain "unwound" string felt...that came with the set. Needless to say,this lil' pic-bass is the bomb! It has tone-unknown...and i would love to send the neck to the gentleman who converts fretted necks into "fretless" ones. I pluged the Mikro up when i unboxed it(ampeg amp...)and i hated to take the stock strings off of it,cause it sounded "so" good!

Mizmor,

I forgot to tell you that is a modded Mikro, but stock still sounds similar - in other words, much different from the SX's. The SX with the DiMarzio has been modded with 500K pots which I think you are hearing. There are so many possibilities for aftermarket changes.

You really can't go wrong with either bass. It depends on your taste.

I think you'll be happy with either one and either one will be a good mod platform.
FYI- The E string on my Mikro sounds just fine and not flabby at all.

Let us know what you get and make sure to post pics!

1) Yeah. My MIJ Fender VI has a scale length of 30.3", and for the sake of a low E string response with guts I wouldn't want it even .001" shorter.

2) Please, let's not make accusations as a way of helping.
