MIM F-Jazz with bowed neck

Hi Folks,

Anyhow, I am searching for a nice leftie bass for my 14 year old son who's had a decent small-scale cheap-o chinese P-bass copy for a few years.

I found a MIM Jazz (2006 Burgundy 60th anniversary edition supposedly) and went to look at it. The guy wanted $350 with a hardshell case and was advertising it as "hardly ever played." seemed like a fair deal and it is a nice looking bass.

Problem is, I went to check it out and played it a bit (I played some awhile back and know enough to get a decent idea of how a bass feels and sounds, even though I play right-handed) and the strings were WAY off the neck as the neck approached the body (the higher frets).

I looked more closely at the neck and it was bowed pretty severely. (I don't know how much to estimate but maybe half a centimeter total to the headstock?)

This bass does have a truss rod. My question is: Is this something that's easily fixable in a shop, after which the bass neck will hold its adjustment and have nice action? Or, conversely, is this neck likely shot? (and, if the latter, I assume this bass is likely not worth fitting with a new neck.)

Thank you in advance for help on this. If anyone has thoughts on good leftie basses for $300-400 (new or used) that would be great, too.

If the truss rod is working not broken or stripped then the bow should be easy to take out of the neck. If the truss rod is not working walk away for this bass.

get some instructions here on talk bass on how to adjust a truss rod if the rod is not defective that will solve your problems, or you can take the bass to a luthier to adjustments and to put some good new strings

In case you get no satisfaction with this bass keep an eye out for a left-handed Squier Vintage Modified Jazz bass. It's a little over $300 (maybe $350) new and an excellent bass. Give it a try.

you've A/B'd them with the mexifenders and found them comparable?

I guess the big difference, then, between a $300 used MIM jazz and a $350 used Squier would be resale value.

Were I a lefty, I'd be looking at Carvin. They offer all of their basses lefty for no charge. Good luck finding any other brand that does that!
