I bought a made in Mexico Jazz bass today. 1998 in very good condition. It came with hard shell SKB case. I paid $250 from a local want ad. I figured it was a good deal. Anyone had much experience with these?

MIM jazz Bass any good?

seems to me like ya' got a pretty good deal. i normally see these go from $300-400 with a case in my area. not anything spectacular, but a good bang for the buck and a good workhorse. congrats!
I looked at the current model's price on Musician's Friend and thought $250 with a case was worth trying it out. Plus i liked the graphic on the headstock of this model better than the current year's.
I see this subject a lot so I won't state the obvious. I think they're decent basses and well worth upgrading. I'd highly recommend going to a store with a bunch of them so you can pick and choose. I wouldn't buy one sight unseen.
yeah, but for 250 bones, good score. for a beginner it will serve its purpose. i think he got his money's worth. fret not. pun intended.
MIM vs. MIA Jazz Bass? About a grand more left in your pocket and the audience can't tell the difference...neither can 98% of the posters on this site (myself included) if it weren't for the label on the headstock no matter how loudly they protest. You got a great deal. Good purchase. Enjoy.

Years ago I got this early ‘00 at the local GC used dept for $250, and thought it was a decent deal before I knew it came with the TKL case. It had a dent in the end of the headstock and one tiny chip in the clear on the top/back of the body. Great player, too, but I got something else right afterwards, so I really barely touched it.
This was many years ago, though, and I sold it earlier this year for $260 without the case.
I do have a MIM Jazz V, and I think they’re great basses.

I love mine. I slapped some Seymour Antiquity II's and a Babicz bridge on mine, and haven't found one that plays better.
You got yourself a great deal. The only thing about this era of MIM Fender Jazz basses is that the pickups are both the same size. If you wish to change the pickups at some point, you'll have to route the bridge pickup's hole as well as, most likely, the pickguard's hole for the neck pickup. The job is easy to do, I done mine myself with a dremel and my job is very clean.

Someone asks here how do you know if its a good deal if you never owned one,I say you cant ever go wrong with a Fender they are always a safe bet and I myself owned a bunch of Fenders and I would like to say I owned more made in America but the truth is I owned more mexicans,I have owned 3 jazz bass guitars 1 P-bass 1 tele and 2 strats from mexico,they are good value and if you dont like them you can always recoop most if not all your money.Oh nice jazz
I purchased a MIM Jazz in February of this year. I really like it, but I did change the cosmetics to my taste (black pick guard) - I run it through a Backline 250 with a 15" JBL cabinet. and it sounds pretty good through my Peavey Minx 110 practice amp.- it has a rosewood neck and I really like the feel of it. The pickup have a wicked hum if you adjust them to different volumes - I'm a finger player. so I did add a thumb rest so i could anchor my thumb the way I like to - I paid $500.- so your price was a pretty good one - just for comparison, I also own a Specter NS2 & a '73 Precision Bass- and the MIM certainly measures up.
Good deal on a good bass??? - you bet... but the rest of the above is a steaming pile, IMO...
