hi all. at a store in my town they have a mim fender jazz that they have put a badass bridge on and replaced the pickups with emg's. one knob is a stack........dont know what it controls. plays pretty nice but i dont have any experience with mim's. they want 800.00 for it and it is brand new. does this sound like a resonable price or not? im just looking for a descent four string. nothing flashy.

MIM JAZZ QUESTION

That sounds high to me. New Standard Mexican Fenders without those upgrades sell for $495. Their Deluxe Active sells for $595

no pre amp and its not even active. sounded high to me but i didnt know. this store has always seemed high to me but they do alot of business. they try to make you feel bad if you even bring one in to have the action set that you didnt buy there. they have some guys there that do pretty good work on guitars but they dont like it if you didnt buy it from them. thanks for the info.
unless they put a new neck on it I wouldn't ever buy a MIM fender.
I have had 2 bad MIM jazz bass necks. I Will never buy one again.
$800 does not sound to bad if its got a stacked knob it most likely has a pre in it. The bridge and pickups alon would cost probably $300 dollars, so for a $500 bass with a bunch of upgrades it not that bad. But you could probably get a stock one thats a little nicer for cheaper.

i didnt think it had a pre amp but maybe it does. you guys know more about this stuff than i do. i just recently got back into playing and alot of things have changed since i was playing all the time. there isnt a place for a battery in the back of the guitar so i was assuming it wasnt active. i have an old electra 4 string i bought new around 1980. i recently bought a new olp 5 string with maple fret board thats passive. and i just got a new yamaha trb1006 6 string thats active.
sometimes, especially on modded jazzes (at least the ones I have seen and the one I made) they just put the battery under the control plate instead of routing a new hole for it in the back.
but go ask.
plus, I wouldn't buy it. but thats just me. it may be a great guitar for you.
thanks again for the info everyone. im not going to buy it. just thought if i could buy one in town and keep the money local i would but it seemed high to me too. we have 2 music stores in my town and the next closest is about an hour away. i originally was asking them about american made jazz basses and they said 800.00 was the starting price for those and it was a highway 1 model or something like that and the prices went up from there.
