MIM P Bass D & G string little volume

I recently acquired a MIM P bass that had custom wound pickups installed. When I play it, the E & A string response, punch and volume are great. But when I move to the D & G strings, I can barely hear the notes. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

It could be the strings or

If that is the case a neodymium magnet could reset the polarity/strength.
You can get a gauss meter app for a smart phone that will be accurate enough to tell you if that's the problem. You'll just have to find the right spot on your phone where the sensor is. Polarity can be tested with another magnet just do not use to strong of a magnet.
