Mini Basses

How’s this going? I saw an IG post that looks like it’s probably you based on the screen name. I went hunting for your NBD thread but stumbled on this update.

I’ve got a Miezo 18 on the way soon.
Yeah, sorry.
I’m not great about NBDs or posting pics here.
So far, the Miezo is great! Sounds good, plays well.
I may swap out just the B string as the stock one need some minor adjustment (which i haven’t even attempted yet), but i’m just using it to run tunes and keep my fingers loose.
I do wish i had the option of the 18” when i ordered mine as the fret spread on the 16” gets real cramped quickly.
And i upgraded the pickup to a dual coil for the hum cancelling and a bit more girth on the low end.
Past that, the thing is pretty danged perfect.
It’s a great tool, and i highly recommend anyone looking for something in this vein to consider the Miezo 18”.

My Miezo 18 came today:

I posted this in the ambient/textural thread (I'm using this with a big board), but for those who missed it:

  • Way lighter than I'd imagined
  • Looks even better than it did in the photo
  • Those Nordy Zen Blades are EXACTLY the sound I'm looking for, nice and punchy
  • Gonna need to make a very short strap. I think, because of the short neck, I'll want to play this much higher on my body than a full-scale
  • Has great action, not tense at all
  • Works great with an e-bow
  • I currently have it tuned ADGCFBb. I am going to mess around with F# and G tonight, as well as maybe experiment with some other tunings when I change the strings
  • Certainly takes a bit to get used to. I think the whole spatial thing of the shorter neck is just gonna take some time to get used to. The strange thing is playing an open string and expecting something a lot lower.

Okay, a few more observations after playing the Miezo for a few hours...
  • Maurizio says they set the action somewhat low - I had to do some adjusting, for sure.
  • Did I mention how good the Nordy Zen Blade sounds?
  • Also, another thing interesting-- for some reason, it just feels odd playing an open string. Not that the bass feels strange, it's just that I think I'm conditioned to hear the really low note. So what I found myself doing was often fretting behind the zero fret. It does absolutely nothing to affect anything, it just felt more 'normal', if that makes any sense.
  • Due to regulations, it doesn't ship with the battery - so, yes, your toggle is an active/passive switch, not an 'on off' switch, which is what it felt like before I figured out there was no battery.
  • The way the strings go to the top of the neck through the slots is pretty well-designed. At no point does the string really make much contact with the groove in the wood. It bends, to just touch the metal thing that holds them in
  • The neck is completely flat, no radius, as is what would be considered the back of the 'neck'. It does require being conscious of thumb placement, as, at first, I was mashing my thumb in there, pretty hard, but then finally figured out a nice pivot angle. If you're not playing a 6 string, it's probably a bit less of an issue.
So, still very happy with it, I played around with some straight-up grooving, as well as put it through the big pedalboard.

I guess you can bend three halve steps or so then with those flubby strings? Can you also use them for slapping? And is the spacing on the highest frets not becoming too tight?

In order:
1) no much bending, with standard roundwound strings. (BTW: a 25" scale bass with standard strings is not FLUBBY at all!)
2) you can definitely slap
3) not on most mini basses with a standard "L" bridge

:)
