While I have tried a number of LDS cabs, I don't own any (yet!
:smug: ). I have never tried any Avatar cabs. I do own two Dr. Bass cabs, but Marc is making some mods to them for me, so I didn't have them handy, or else I would have surely thrown them in. My Dr. Bass cabs are neo-equipped 2x10 and 1x15. Based upon my recollection (and some prior comparisons with some of the cabs in the "shootout), I'd say that they would be in the ballpark tonally and volume-wise, but my only complaints before were that they were a little "rough around the edges" sounding. I am hopeful, though, that the modifications being done to them will make a great pair of cabs even better.

Tom. PLEASE don't take this the wrong way....
For a guy with a formidable array of top quality boxes
and amps, i must admit i'm somewhat puzzled by your
choice of basses. I've never thought of the pilot as a
top end, great tone producing bass. Not bad, but not
nearly in the league of your amps and boxes. The
thunderbird is a cool bass, but again not exactly mainstream.
Perhaps you've found your "voice" in these basses,
I just keep thinking its like buying a high end sports car,
and using regular unleaded gas in it. But i can't argue
the fact that i usually agree completely with your ears
and opinions. Also, the suspence is killing me here.

I'm sorry all of my posts have become so derailing and off topic...

I agree that Tom B has great taste in speakers and strange taste in basses, but it's his purrr-ogative. You are probably the only guy running a Thunderbird through a Walter Woods Ultra tho!

Excellent point! Allow me to explain. As far as 4-strings go, I haven't found any bass that feels better in my hands or sounds better to me than my Thunderbird. I played a lot of basses before deciding on the T-Bird, and many were far more expensive. My primary backup is my Gibson Explorer, so I guess I am kind of a "Gibson" guy. The DeArmond Pilot 5 Deluxe was my intial forray into 5-string land, and I scored it so cheap that I couldn't pass it up. I liked how hit played, but didn't care for the electronics, so I had fellow TBer Uncletoad throw some Barts and an OBP-1 into it. Much improved! Still, I have been keeping my eyes open for a good 5-string, as I do not feel thathe Pilot is up to "Thunderbird standards." Even so, I have preferred it to many basses that I thought would blow it away (Smiths, USA-made MTD's, Moore, etc.). I am hoping that perhaps Fodera or Skjold might hold the ticket for me.

We shall see...

The question is, should I be trying to get more Thunderbird users to see the beauty of the Walter Woods, or should I be trying to get more Walter Woods users to feel the power of the mighty Thunderbird!?! :D

I can't fully explain just why I love the T-Bird so. It is just "my sound." But, strangely enough, I don't go for the same amps/cabs that many T-Bird players seem to use. That said, prior to "finding the light" with EA, Accugroove, Epifani, & Bergantino cabs, I found (to my surprise) that the Mesa Boogie Diesel and RR 4x10's and 2x15's were my favorite cabs, and a number of Thunderbird players do pair up with older Mesa Boogie cabs. FWIW, I still love my Diesel 4x10, and it is actually in the same tonal ballpark as, say two EA VL-210's (but it won't take the power that two VL-210's will).
