Two issues i was having with my Peavey MiniMega amp;
One, a soft bag did not seem adequate travel protection to me.
And two, the head smelled of brimstone whenever the Kosmos function was engaged.
(Anyone else have this issue?)
First, I threw a pair of CPU fans over the vents to pull air across to heat sinks more better. That seems to do the trick, smell wise. Note, it has never entered any kind of thermal protection mode or anything, just an ominous ozone smell without the extra fans.
So then I was about to build a one off felted rack-box out of plywood.
But when i measured the unusual 12x12" footprint of the MiniMeg, it hit me, that's milkcrate size!
A quick scrub of a found crate and a quick hand cut with a wood saw and it looks like Peavey planed it that way.
The amp is screwed through the bottom into its own side rails.
The two crate halves are screwed and zip tied together.
Left the gap on top for the external fans and to be able to utilize the crate handle for carrying purposes.
Ive now taken longer to type this out than it did to whip this thing up.
But I feel more confident carrying the amp to my next gig. And its still lightweight, which would not have been the case with plywood.
And I suppose it can still shed heat better than if it were insulated with wood and felt as well.
Oh yeah. And it has rubber feet too
Not sure how many other brand class D amps would benefit from a similar crate. As it seems their dimensions vary wildly.
