Whenever I see a 9, or an 11, or a 13 attached to a chord, and I need to know what that note is immediately, I simply subtract 7, and know it's the 2nd, or the 4th, or the 6th, but played above the octave (8). Why... because I'm much more familiar with the first several intervals of a scale, and can recall them almost instantly.
This hack helps me save time by thinking less.
Example;
Key of E
9th (-7)=2nd (F#)
11th (-7)=4th (A)
13th (-7)=6th (C#)
