Mirror, Mirror on the Wall...

There’s no way I could watch myself play. All my life, I’ve made stupid faces when I need to use my brain. Even back when I was a kid, break dancing in the 80’s, everyone would tell me I would stick my tongue out when I’d backspin and do shoulder rolls.
To this day, if I play Portrait of Tracy, I stick out my tongue and wrench my jaw to the right side of my face when doing that fretted harmonic pinky stretch.

Today I just happen to do a 180 from the amp and look up, and I caught myself in the mirror. This reminded me of an interview I saw of Steve Vai, where he said that he looked at himself in the mirror all the time when practicing, because he wanted to practice looking cool, or something to that effect. I always thought that was kind of corny, and maybe even vain.

The funny thing is I kept looking, not because I was looking at myself, but because I was looking at how awesome my Bass looked. I also noticed that my fretting hand looked a bit tense while practicing “one finger per fret” technique, and proceeded to relax it. This made me realize right away that looking at yourself in the mirror while practicing could be a great tool to improve on technique. Kind of watching film but in real-time.

Anyways, got me wondering if any of you look at yourself in the mirror when practicing (or did at one point), either as an aid or just to admire your Bass? Or do I just add this as an item on my crazy list?

I bet Gene Simmons spent a lot of time in front of a mirror with his bass strapped on.

We were somewhere around the second verse of Highway Star when the drugs began to take hold

There is a second verse?? I must have played that song 100s of time, but never listened to the lyrics. I learn songs grouping the individual cells. Like intro, outro , verses, bridge, pre-chouses and “B” sections if used.

Rarely do I even listen to the lyrics, let alone memorize them, but I do follow the rhythm cadence and pitch of melody, vocal or instrumental.

A 2nd verse? Really? lOL!

I stumbled upon this idea from having a large, unwanted mirror handed off to me by a relative.
Sat it on the floor in my practice room, not really thinking about it, but would notice things about my posture, hand technique, and "personality", etc while practicing. Now, I make it a point to look into the mirror from time to time while I jam/practice. Can be enlightening.

It is a good practice technique and much better than staring down at your hands. I read an interview in BP with a pro who took a lesson on upright with Ron Carter, and Ron had him play in front of a mirror to assess his hand positions and told him to install a mirror in his practice room.

When I was a kid I played for the first few formative years looking at myself in a mirror. I think it’s the best way to self assess your hand positions and technique.

I always looked at myself in the mirror... I'm just so dang handsome...

...

but yes. For all the instruments I've played since I was a little kid, seeing what you look like while you play, your stance, posture, hand position(s), tenseness or relaxation etc, is all very important.

Particularly, some folks really don't know how they move (or don't), pose (or don't) while playing live. Lots of people think they move more than they do.... when on stage, they ought to actually move more than they do. Still others move too dang much, or at least not in attractive ways.... I've been in both positions, and I gotta say now, to hell with it, I'll look/move however the heck I want to.

After all, it's the basses that get the girls... I'm just along for the ride.

Naw, he just got pretty girls to tell him how he looked all the time.

The man doesn't do drugs or alcohol, but he's just as big an addict as anyone who does.... just with women (...more power to him for keeping that marriage going though!).
