Mispronouncing Ottawa

Here in Ottawa, Canada we're chuckling at Tucker's pronunciation of our fair city's name. It sounds like how a Bostonian would say "a tower".



We say it more like this:

I’ve heard lots of people pronounce it “auto-wah” but I’ve always pronounced it more as “aw-da-wuh”.

I'll bet a lot of people think Sydney is the capital of Australia. Plenty of non-Canadians think Toronto is the Canadian capital.

For sure. I think there are also a lot of Torontonians who likely think that Toronto is the capital of Canada.

It's always funny to hear somebody try to put somebody down while getting it wrong themselves.

That happens most often with people who are always trying to put somebody down.

I had cousins from Rural NSW, and they would say exactly that...How did you know? Are you formally from Aus?

My mom is from Goulburn and my grandmother lived in Coffs. Uncle in Wee Jasper and cousin in Sydney. Been almost twenty-five years since I last visited though.

It's a bit like how some foreigners (or out-of-staters) pronounce Newark. They say 'New-irk' when it's quite obviously 'Nork.'

Should sound like Ed-un-brrrruh.

In Texas we have an Edinburg.
No “h” on the end.
It is pronounced Edin-burg

Even for someone who has traveled a lot, - you can’t know every colloquial pronunciation of every place.
And you can’t always get it right, reading a teleprompter on live TV.
