Mispronouncing Ottawa

It’s always interesting to read French names on maps of New England and to then hear how the locals pronounce those names.

Montpelier in Vermont is a good example. Mont-peel-yer.

For sure. I think there are also a lot of Torontonians who likely think that Toronto is the capital of Canada.

We all know Montreal is the capital. Sheesh!

It's a bit like how some foreigners (or out-of-staters) pronounce Newark. They say 'New-irk' when it's quite obviously 'Nork.'

There's a Newark, Ohio. It's properly pronounced Nerk-uh-hi.

Washington has a bunch of lovely place names, and it's always fun to hear how a national news reporter will pronounce Puyallup. Problem is, when Puyallup is in the national news, it ain't because something good has happened.

yes! = right outside the town of lafayette, in the boonies --- i heard a lot of older hoosier folks pronounce it that way, growing up.

We've got some wild ones here in Louisiana - my favorite is Natchitoches, pronounced "Naka-dish". People mess it up in the most hilarious ways. And don't get me started on the horrible mispronunciation "New Orleeeens". Gross. It's "New Or-lins", or better, "N'Orlins".

There's a Newark, Ohio. It's properly pronounced Nerk-uh-hi.

I've heard that dialect. The last syllable just sort of trails off. Another keeps the final 'uh' syllable but it's simply an extension of the 'hi,' with its existence implied by a downward pitch movement.

Here in Vt Charlotte is pronounced the same as across the Lake. It shook me up when I first got here!

I came from Chicago and I’ll air out here my favorite pet peeve pronunciation -
