missing one neck screw

It would have been the #1 position in your diagram.

When you posted about your bass I suspected it was wither in the 1 or 2 position. If the missing screw was in the 1 or 2 position I'd expect it might lift from string tension over time.

In post 15 The OP stated his was missing a screw on the bridge side. As was mentioned in post 18 a screw missing in bridge side (3 or 4) would not lift from string tension since the string tension would tend to drive the end of the neck into the pocket. My "15 year bass" came to me with the screw missing in the 2 position so I moved the screw from the 4 position to the 2 position and all has been well since.

Your experience might or might not match his experience though. There are so many variables to consider beyond screw placement.

The question is still, why not replace the screw?
...or for that matter, even argue against doing so?

or, if you prefer, call me overly cautious, then. I'd replace the screw.

Have you not been reading my posts?

I've already stated twice that I wasn't recommending that the screw not be replaced, and that my original post was simply to demonstrate that within the timeframe the OP mentioned until he could get the screw replaced ("less than a week" see post 3) there wouldn't be any problems.

Tell you what...I triple-dog dare you to take out neck screw 3 or 4 out of your bass for 15 years and see if I'm wrong.

I have read nothing where anyone said to NOT replace the screw. I have only seen where its been said that, short term, it isn't that big of a concern. Who, by any stretch of the imagination is going to go around with a missing screw indefinately? No one. It's always going to nag at you until its fixed. Until OP has the time to go out with his sample screw and hunt a match down or orders one from the maker, it is fine for him to play his bass. That's all that Mongo and others have said here; its fine, short term. Some people read a lot of imagined stuff into simple advice that its ok to play his bass for now.

I see the Op worried about leaving strings at pitch and playing the thing until he replaces it. I see the OP may feel at a loss a to where to procure one that is an exact match to the threads already cut into the heel. Valid. It will be ok until he finds one. Let's take a step back and see if we can help him find the proper screw.

Thanks everyone for the opinions! i was really worried about my bass being utterly destroyed by a missing screw by the time i made the thread, lol.
Now i'm just waiting for the nice people at the store i bought the bass to call me about my fretless that i left there for repairs so i'll bring this one and ask them to help me find a replacement for the missing screw, since they sold it without the screw anyway.

And i'm pretty sure the screw isnt broke inside the hole or something, weird isn't it? i'm wondering why someone would take a out a screw, this is so.. strange.
