Can you use a cheap mixer before an expensive preamp in a recording setup to simplify your in and outs? I want to use a Behringer mixer with all my mics and/or line level gear with the gains turned low and then the master outs plugged into an Avalon stereo channel strip. Will this significantly color the tone?

Mixer before preamp

This is really more of a "should you" than an "can you" question. That signal flow doesn't make much sense, for so many reasons that it would take a while to go through them all. To just touch on them, if you really want to commit to your on the fly mixes as you make them (...why ?...) you can't expect the Avalon to redeem the sound quality of the Behringer. And you'd be begging for gain staging challenges by using double preamps, with the first one having less headroom and the second one getting line level signals in mic inputs.
What in the world are you trying to do? Why don't you tell us what you're trying to do and what equipment you have and then we can help. Are you trying to put a bunch of instruments premixed into 2 tracks (like we use to do in the old days when going to 4 or 8 track tape)? If so, the Avalon isn't going to help you, just use the Behringer.
I'm with the others. Why not just go into the Avalon unit and then to your interface, or possibly direct to your interface. What is the Behringer doing for you in terms if convenience, routing, tone, etc. that makes it seem desirable?
