Anyone have any experience with MJT finished bodies? I was going to order a Precision body from USACG and have it reliced by MJT. While exploring their website I saw you can buy a body directly from MJT and have it finished by them. This would cut my overall cost by more than $100. Just wondering if the build quality would be the same? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

I can’t imagine the build quality being too much worse, but USACG may have more options for woods and be able to provide you with a guaranteed lighter piece of wood. I am unsure if MJT would do this for less than your $100 difference. I am sure that USACG has a wider selection of wood to draw from in the same way that MJT has more finish options than USACG.

Paying more seems to be the way to get the best of both worlds.

I have this one on the way but they just did the refin....sent them my own body. My experience has been top notch I can’t imagine their bodies would be any different.

Love my MJT body, has a standard Warmoth neck that I finished with a 70s Fender Jazz Bass decal and most people think it’s a real vintage bass, more importantly to me the construction and playability of the bass overall is as good if not better then Most of the Fenders built in corona... just an amazing bass. I’ve got it routed for either p/j or j/j

I have had 2 but found the neck pocket screw holes do not match up with standard Fender type necks, they are a good few millimetres out.

I used a blank Warmoth neck so was able to drill the matching holes no problem, but if you're using an existing neck you may find you have to plug the neck's original holes and redrill again.

The bodies are not always 2 centre joined pieces of wood (a pet peeve) and the Jazz Pickup routing is much deeper than usual which means very long pickup screws are necessary.

Customer service though was exemplary.

I’ve bought 3 MJT finished bodies from their ebay page - Strats and Tele, no basses. I absolutely love these bodies. I buy Warmoth necks and MJT bodies and have made some killer guitars.

The nitro finish along with the lightweight bodies make them feel vintage. I have some Warmoth bodies, but they are heavier (even the chambered ones!) and the poly finish seems thick.

Only downside is resale value of any parts bass will be a fraction of what it cost you just in parts.

Very true. It’s not easy to make money on a parts bass unless you take the time to scrounge around for some real parts bargains. I’ve built about 15 parts basses. A couple of them cost me almost $1k each, but came out exactly the way I wanted.

I used MJT for a project a few years ago and can't say anything about their own bodies (as I sent them my own) but I was fairly happy with the refinishing and relicing they did for me. I wasn't thrilled about how some of the wear was actually created when examining the body in person, but in photos and overall, the work was fine. Customer service was excellent, however; and it took about 2 months.
