MLB 2024

Amazing how the game changes. Go back a decade, it was about power and OBP, bunting and stealing were wastes.
I'm glad to see the steal being a bigger part of the game again. "Back in the day" Ricky Henderson may have been an arrogant donkey but he sure was fun to watch on the bases. The new rules limiting pickoff attempts have really opened up the paths for the speedy guys and IMO it makes the game more fun to watch.

Forgot that lost in the mix of today's Cubs-Nationals blowout was the MLB debut of Dusty Baker's son Darren. Came to the plate in the 9th and got a hit on the first MLB pitch he saw. Mom and Dad were in the stands to see it and cheer him on, nice.

Shota continues to shine. 7 innings of no hit, no run ball backended by the bullpen delivering no hit relief for the Cubs first no hitter at Wrigley in over 50 years - when Milt Pappas threw what *should* have been a perfect game if not for Bruce Froemming. Shota didn't have any objections to being lifted after 7, wasn't even aware that he had a no hitter going. Dansby Swanson WAS aware and that's why he refused to be lifted for rest late in what had become a blowout - and also refused to say WHY he wanted to stay in so as not to jinx his pitcher. Some thought Dansby was looking for a triple to complete the cycle but he just wanted to keep his glove in the game.
Trivia - first time in MLB history a rookie started and finished a no hitter.

So we get a three game homestand against the Mariners for what I'm calling the Battle Of The Five Hundreds. At least Goldschmidt has been on a bit of a tear recently. But too little, way too late.

Seattle had their 9th walk-off loss of the season today. Ugh.
They are killing me this season. It started so well, now they are just doing the flip side of what they did last season. No hitting is doing what no hitting does. At least they scored some runs last night. Against the As, so how hard can that be? They are something like five games back. They could overtake the Astros if they go on a tear and the Astros fade.

@Gaolee - You have been a Yusei Kikuchi naysayer, but I think the Astros might have fixed him..! He's 3-0 since the trade to Houston. And most importantly, even if he didn't get the W in all 6 of his starts so far in Houston, the team has won every game he's started since he got there. He's still walking a few guys every start, but it seems like he's throwing strikes a bit more consistently since he got to Houston. He's had a couple of high strikeout totals, the ERA is steadily going down, and he hasn't had any blow-up starts. He's a free agent this winter. Think the M's will want to bring him back? If he can keep doing this, every team should want to sign him up! (For the right number of years and dollars, of course.)

His wheels will come off in crunch time. It's a historic pattern.

The last few Mariners games have been a study in contrasts. They wasted a great game by Logan Gilbert, struck out, and generally stunk up the place, then followed up by scoring ten runs. The Edgar school of hitting seems to be seeping in a bit. I hope so, but it may be a bit late now.

Hell even I felt bad for Gilbert after that performance. Threw an absolute doozy with a highly efficient pace. Two mistakes, two ERs, and zero support.

The Rockies achieved a new record yesterday.

They played an entire game against one Tigers pitcher, and for the first time in their history, used only 27 batters. At Comerica Park they had just three singles and took only 27 turns at the plate against Keider Montero. It was the first time in Colorado history that the club sent the minimum 27 batters to the plate in a nine-inning game.

That's the 15th shutout this season, but (sarcasm mode on) at least it was achieved economically with minimum exertion in batting.

I have faith they can reach the century mark!
