MM Stingray Passive-Active Switch

I was in the studio at rehearsal, and the battery in my 91 MM Stingray V started giving out. For some reason, neither I or anyone else had a 9-volt (Usually I always have some, but not this time). I took it out and found that not only does it play fine without a battery, but that big passive pickup sounds GREAT by itself! I hadn't realized it worked that way. I'd still like to use the preamp, but it would be great to be able to go passive without opening up the back and removing the battery. How much of a job would it be to set up, say, a push-pull pot that cut out the preamp? And would anyone have a link to a schematic for such a modification? Thanks in advance!
