Had a gig last night at a 4th of July block party, and it went very well. Free beer and food, which was awesome (the guy who threw the party is a caterer)! It was very laid back, we played three 30min sets, mostly originals. The band is really fun, playing hip-hop/R&B with some heavy reggae and funk influences. The neighborhood came out, ate, drank, and had a good time. There was even a fire dancer twirling torches! Now for my personal takeaway, DANG MY P BASS WAS SOUNDING GOOD!
The BL turned around a few times throughout the sets to ask about it, even, remarking that the groove sounded nastier and asking if it was a new bass. Watching a few videos today, and listening to it from the audience perspective, I agree that it sounded good! Cut through the mix, held down the low end, tone knob made useful changes. All the things I’m never too sure of when I’m on stage with earplugs in.
It’s a Squier CV70s w/fender flats, I’ve had it just about a year, but this was my first time playing out with it. I nearly always bring my fretless VM tele bass, because the band leader has remarked before about how much she likes the glissando and vibrato of the fretless, but tonight I took my p. I had cut my pinky pretty good a few hours before the show, and I figured it’d be easier to clean blood off the glossy poly CV neck than it would be to clean it off the satin VM. Luckily, I didn’t have to find out, as it had healed well enough by then. I’m going to have to rotate this bass into the works more often. Oh yeah, last little highlight of the night, we got the cops called on us around 9PM. They just said to turn down a bit and call it quits at 10, and we kept right on playing!
