I think the main problem with this statement is that there shouldn't be any rules to what is acceptable in music. Playing a song at 140bpm is perfectly acceptable, just look at Devin Townsend or Pitchshifter. The only type of music I can think of that uses this type of speed and is a bad form of music is UK commercial club music.

Slap bass in heavy metal....by Heavy Metal are you referring to bands such as Iron Maiden, Kiss etc.?

Downtuning has been admonished many a time by people, and defended by others. But you are making blanket statements about things that are not deserving of it. If my guitarist and I were to tune down 2 steps, but play songs that were along the lines of (insert your favourite band here), would we automatically be a bad/untalented/sucky musician?

I've got to ask, if you think tapping is an outdated tacky technique that went out with 80's hair metal

you seem to have strong opinions on what's "crap" and what's "good", and are keen to voice them, so why ask us whether it's useable or even "cool"?


re. slap bass in heavy metal, I did like how Billy Gould used it in Faith No more.

as for the dates that you said that slap and tapping were "invented" i'd say you were off by atleast 10 years. jimi hendrix did tapping, a limited amount but he still did tap, just listen to the end of axis bold as love and you can hear it. as for slap the technique for upright bass was used way before the 70's and the person who supposedly played slap on electric was larry graham of graham central station and sly and the family stone which was started way before the 70's.
