Check out the Atomic Amps Bass Box. It’s not quite available yet, and there’s, literally, zero demos right now. They just announced it a couple of weeks ago at NAMM. That one SEEMS to check all of your boxes. The guitar version is very highly regarded, so the bass one should be killer as well.

THAT looks pretty nice...provided the EQ fits what I use (I like a hump around 2.8-3.2k and then roll off some of the highs...)

Thanks for the heads up. Not sure if the switching will do what I need it to - a lot of these things have an on/offs switch, which turns everything on and off. I need to be able to leave the eq on, and turn the drive on and off - I see that box is programmable, which may offer a way out of that dilemna, but not sure. Also, did I mention it took literally dozens of tries to find the right overdrive? I'm apparently very picky.

I have been using the Eden WTDI for a while on one of my axes for the reason you state, getting more of an "old school" sound. I find it does the job beautifully. There is a lot of control, as well as variation, available on the device but you can dial in your sound quickly. It is also very clean but you can't set it on top of the amp or there will be interference. I am a little surprised it isn't ranked higher on your poll.

Hey bass dudes

I'm considering buying a pedal-sized amp modeler (EDIT: or preamp) which I can leave in my bass bag for emergency situations at gigs - XLR out is pretty much essential.

There's quite a few different ones out there nowadays - I usually play Rock'n'Roll/60's/Motown kind of stuff so I'm after something that can accurately get those old school muffled sounds well. I like tubes but for emergency situations it's not essential really so long as I've got a bit of tone-sculpting...

I've got a Line 6 PodXT which is great for amp/"general decent sound" modelling but it's not as portable/pedal-like as it could be...they're pretty big lumps and haven't got an XLR out

Any suggestions I've not put in the poll would be welcomed! (I've probably missed/forgotten about a few options...)

Has it?! Mine's only got "DI" and "Modeled" balanced jack outputs...

I mean the 3-pin microphone type, not the guitar-lead TRS 1/4 jack...ok, it does the job but that doesn't really help if you only have an XLR cable going to the D.I. box your amp or bass is plugged into the desk with...I don't really want the hassle of going over to the soundguy and pissing him off by suddenly needing to change cables plugged into the desk or multicore mid-song so I can get the pod going when the amp goes down if I can possibly avoid it - therefore it needs to have an XLR connector and be small...

Frankly I haven’t tsken mine out of 6 case in a while

I know I’ve performed live/ ampless and used a mic line out although TRS option was also available

I’ll look st it next week and confirm

So then all you need is a short balanced male TRS to female XLR cable.

For the VT Bass DI, I usually use something between the "Fat Tube" and "Flip Top-style" from this chart.

I voted VT Bass DI from Tech 21.

Ampeg SCR-DI and Aguilar Tonehammer would get you vintage sound too...but they would likely not fit into your gigbag. Plus Aquilar seems to be an overkill for a back up tool...
