Big fan of Lydia Loveless, and Ben is a good player and very nice guy. I have caught them a few times over the last couple years. If anyone gets the opportunity to see them, while they are still playing small clubs, I would highly recommend it.

I've been fortunate enough to open up for her, she's fantastic, and from my hometown to boot.

I have to say that I really like Brad Paisley, Eric Church, and the Zac Brown Band. I think they have the right idea. Lately I've rediscovered Marty Stuart, Vince Gill, and Buck Owens. But when it comes right down to it, I'll take Waylon, Conway, or the Possum any day over 99% of these new acts.

I'm with you on Brad Paisley and Zac Brown - great music, great lyrics. Eric Church I can't stand (trying to hard to be a badass), but that's just my opinion.

While I like and respect some country song writers for their originality and ability to honestly tell a heart-warming story, by the same token, NOBODY jumps on a bandwagon like the country music business (except rap artists of course).

While they're hardly straight-up country (most of the time), I'm a big fan of the Drive-By Truckers.

I'll start out by saying I kind of like where "modern country" has gone. to me it's an extension of 80's hair metal, except instead of Vince Neil on a Superglide it's Gretchen Wilson in a Silverado. This is big hair country, make no mistake.

Good point, I can see the parallels. This helps explain why I DON'T like mainstream modern country.

Big fan of the Truckers myself. Having lived the vast majority of my life in Jackson, MS, I can tell you that the things that these guys sing about is as real as it gets. Not for folks thats have a romantic view of what it "might" be like to live in the country but what it's like, warts and all.

Modern country is selling the same type of fantasy as the glam bands did, just a different twist but a fantasy just the same. Not for me but I really like alt-country and classic country.
