Modern Vintage MVP4-62

But first, some pics. Sorry it’s raining so no sunny glamour shots.

Just got mine and it's absolutely amazing!! The neck is perfect (for my taste - slim C). Finish is perfect. I was looking between a Fender custom shop that I tried in local store and that Modern vintage and I'm so happy with my choice. A real J bass at reasonable price.

Mine turned up yesterday! The setup (which is perfectly good) needs tweaking for my likes, and I'm going to put some La Bella black nylons on it first, but my initial impressions are that it's excellent. Beautiful finish and general build quality.
Very excited to try it with tapes though! Shall report back!

Beautiful!

is the nut width on the P 1.75". What's the overall neck feel? Chunky?

Thanks.

Mine's back from being set up and is even better than when it arrived! I've opted for La Bella Black Tapewounds on this, and they're perfect for it....you know how some basses just work with a certain type of string?!
Sounds excellent, wonderful 60's warm thump.

Yes, 1.75" 60's spec nut-width, but I wouldn't call the neck chunky. 60's P's tended to be wide and flat, and this is very much that vibe in my opinion, very comfortable IMO.

Cheers

I mean sure, that's a glowing review. But when the dude buys 3 of them within the space of 2 weeks alarms bells are ringing Willy.

I'm intrigued, but I'll wait for the first unbiased TB user review.

This deeply hurt my feelings as a long time TB user...lol :p (if you can figure out my original username, I will send you a cookie). Def a biased review since I played the J at NAMM and already knew I loved it. Hopefully other people's feedback helps you out more :bassist:

I can concur, these modern vintage p basses are so good, I bought two, one with flat wounds and one with round wounds. I was a fender guy before, still am, but dont like glossy polyester necks which all fenders come with. You should at least try one, you'll be impressed. Best p bass I have bought. Even recorded this and my 2010 fender p bass, couldn't tell them apart.

I've a Mike Lull P4 but looking for a more "vintage" P instrument.
Indeed I find the P4 rather modern tone sounding, and I would keep it for more modern tones.
For some reasons Im ending up quite often to play with my 80's Yamaha BB1100 with EMG passive pickups.

I was looking at the Fender AM Vintage II for a more vintage vibe.
But I have the possibility to have a good price on a Modern Vintage MVP4-62.
Unfortunately both basses are quite far from home with no possibility to try them both.

Can I expect to get the full P-bass experience with the Modern Vintage?
Would it be very different from a Fender AM Vintage II? Or at least from my Mike Lull P4?

I compared my 2008 fender p bass against my 2022 modern vintage. I recorded the same parts on both guitars, rock, reggae, soul and pop, with tone rolled on and off and I couldn't tell the difference on any of the recordings. As for quality, my fender is a good one but didnt play anywhere as good as the mpv4. The neck is to die for, build quality exemplary. I have now sold my fender. Imho of course. I dont think you will be disappointed.
