looking back, i wrote a lot, probably too much. but i figure this is the best place to ask and the more variety in opinion i can get the better. so, have at her and know that i am extremely grateful for whatever info and advice i can get.

focus:
finding a happy medium between a mudbucking sound and the punchy jazz bass sound.
where i need help (aka meet and potatoes):
1)opinions on the best passive jazz pickups to deliver that high register punch and still be able to deliver a real warm sound without breaking the bank.
2)should i keep or replace the epi stock sidewinder neck pup? if so, replacement ideas?
3)can i get a really deep sound from a passive pup?

style:
dont do much slap or pick work, though i use them on occasion. i am much more a fingers kinda guy and i love the tone from berry oakley on whipping post from live at the fillmore.
the history:
i recently purchased an used epi eb0 that i want to use as a bass mod project. i own an epi eb3 and i love the really warm, round sound i get from the neck humbucker. my first love is a mim jazz with the usual hum but a fantastic punch in the higher registers. the kicker is that i have been playing an active Dean Edge 4 fretless over the past 3 weeks that I really love the sound of. they are active soapbars that i couldn't identify and the staff at GC told me they were bartolinis though they didn't have the usual bartolini name stamped on em anywhere. i am no wordsmith, but the sound had a lot of depth to it and was very full. they covered the whole spectrum really nicely. this bass as well as the the ones i owned inspired me to try and build some kind of frankenstein bass to fool around with (enter eb0). i am planning on defretting it (a whole nother issue for a whole nother day... or two) and popping in some new pups to accompany the lonely sidewinder at the neck.
