Modifying strings to fit?

Hi everybody. I’ve been wondering about methods to modify a long scale string to fit a short scale string through bass.

I imagine that, although it might be a pain to do, it must be possible. My only idea so far is using heat shrink to keep the wrap together at the post but I’m sure that someone here has tried that and/or other methods in the past.

If you’ve experimented with this before, I’d love to hear what you’ve tried and how it worked out. thanks!

There have been a few threads about using long scale strings on short scale basses. I've done it since I got my first bass in 1968. As long as the posts on the tuning machines are fat and the holes are big enough, I put a bend in the end, cut it off about a half inch past the bend, and string them up. I currently have a Gibson SG bass strung with Dogal Jonas Helborg roundwounds with no problems.

I’ve had a set of long TI flats on my 30” for a few years. It started out unintentional. I used normal wire snips to cut it. If they didn’t work I would have taken the loss years ago.

Just buy D'Addario short scale strings, I was thinking about whether a medium or longer scale set would work on a 28.6 scale bass guitar. And then D'Addario's EXL170S were $4 less than the other bass strings. Could I have ever been any more fortunate. I bought 2 sets.
