MODO Bass - What the hell is this????

I just came across this, and it looks like they want to put all of us out of business.

It might be cool for some, but to me, you just can't fake bass or any live instrument for that matter. You'll always get that "fake" synthetic sound....

Maybe it's just me, but I hate what music is turning into.

I use virtual instruments unapologetically for piano, cello or string quartet sounds on my bands albums so I can see reasons people might buy a bass virtual instrument. Some people just like creating music as a hobby and don’t want to learn multiple instruments. Heck some of the most famous basslines from tv show themes are actually keyboard bass lol. I’d personally rather spend time with my kids or play bass more than spend thousands on good instruments and spend thousands of hours practicing them when really for my band they are just cosmetic fluff like a sprinkling a little seasoning on a good steak. It’s not really necessary but it can be interesting.

All these piano and string sounds in these songs are virtual instruments. I played them on my Korg usb midi controller in the studio than went into midi editor and fixed any major mistakes. Most of the time I leave the subtle timing imperfections just the way they are because I think it has more of a human element that way. If you lock everything to a midi grid it doesn’t really matter how good the samples are it’s going to sound mechanical and fake. I’m sure there are musicians here who can tell these are virtual instruments but no one has ever said anything to any member of my band in person or online about me using virtual instruments for piano and string parts.

Music is made by creating vibrations in the air. Unless you are listening to the sound coming out of the instrument itself, you are listening to an electronic reproduction often bathed in effects, amps, cables, speakers and microphones.

In my view, it is the musician that makes the sound (whatever the source) into music. Here is a song made entirely with virtual instruments many of which were controlled with an expressive MIDI controller called LinnStrument. It is not meant to replace playing in a band - it is just another way of making music. I play Chapman Stick and NS/Stick but used LinnStrument controlling a virtual bass instrument called Trillian.
