Modular Sound Board

if you're gonna buy cheap analog for a bar band, skip the cheese "also-rans" and get yourself an allen-heath mixwizard.

you can find them used for well under a grand, and they're built like "real" boards with individual channel strips. they also have 6 auxes, so you can run 4 monitor mixes, plus delay and reverb.

16 channels is enough for bands doing their own sound in clubs; any more, and you should just hire a guy with bigger stuff.

everything else in that class is either not nearly as good (mackie, carvin, behringer, whatever) or way more expensive (crest).

The reason I hadn't considered the A&H board in the past is because I couldn't find it in the same price range but I can see them going for $825 on the bay: Allen & Heath MixWizard Mix Wizard 3 W3 16:2 16 Mixer | eBay

How do you do that?

You can put the same strip into two spaces on the iLive, but it's just the same set of controls in two different places...how do you digitally split the audio?

I do this on the O1V96 and LS9. Each headamp (preamp) is to a channel on each layer. So of course the trim, polarity, and phantom affect both of the channels. But from there each channel is separate. I use layer 1 for the main mix - non of these channels are routed to the auxes that are used for monitors. Layer 2 is for the monitors - none of these channels is routed to any of the groups or the L/R. So for each instrument/voice you have independent control of the dynamics and EQ for the house mix Vs. the monitor mixes.

You're confusing the strip assignment setup and preamp assignment.

In the "surface setup" utility , say you have the kick in layer 1 strip #1 , it has to be strip #1 /preamp #1 but if you want that same kick on another layer with the same preamp , you have to assign that strip differently in "strip setup".
So if you want that other kick in the 'C' layer , (if your 28 fader are input strips) , you assign that strip as #57 (1st of layer C ) then in the preamp page assign the input #1.
If on that same strip you assign as strip #1 , it will be a duplicate of the kick , not if it is assigned as another strip.

On my church's board you just go into the patchbay and assign the same input to two different faders.

The iLive is a very different animal than any Yamahas.
More an Innovason type of board where you can use the strip as you like , inputs, busses , FX , Matrix , aux ,etc...
You can setup your faders like:
1-kick
2-snare
3-HH
4-FX send
5- group 1-2
6-Master
7- etc..... :eyebrow:

However you like , very flexible.
 
Not (that) confused! I just didn't know that you could split channels inside the Mixrack... how do you do that? :)
It's not in the mixrack it's in "surface setup"
( one of the knobs under the screen)

go to "surface setup" (second knob from the right)
then ; strip setup = to setup your strip function , if you want the kick for monitoring duties , select the first fader on layer C on apply it as an input , assign it as # 57 ( or however you setup your board )
Then get out of "surface setup" and on that #57 fader , go to 'preamp' and assign it to input #1 (preamp #1)

A single mixrack processes 64 input so you can do a 32 input band X 2 for a FOH/Monitoring setup.

The gig I'm on right now , we have two mixrack , two 112 surface ( FOH /monitoring) and we share processing via their ACE protocol ( their version of EtherSound)
