Modulus Flea (4 or 5) love!!!

I'd put more of a fair comparison between the Sonus and Quantum series.
Those are more of the "flagship" I guess you could say designs of both, where as the Flea is what it is-
a signature model bass built to one man's specs that now we all get to enjoy!! :)

Hmm...interesting point.

Having owned the Flea and 3 Quantum 5's, I'd say you could call the Quantum the "flagship" bass, but it has nothing on the Flea in terms of quality. Just different...different form factors (scale/# frets/body) with the Quantum being more clear/deep/versatile and the Flea being more middy and aggressive.

By the way...I think the Legacy would be considered the Zon flagship, wouldn't it?

Anyway, I guess I'm comparing 4 strings here, and IMO, the Sonus 4 has more in common with the Flea 4 than the Quantum 4. The Q4 is 35" with pretty wide spacing, which is enough for me to dismiss it out of the gate. I really don't dig 35" on a 4 string...

I also wouldn't call the Flea bass a highly customized signature bass. There were a few modifications to the Sonic Hammer, but overall, it's pretty similar, IMO. Have you noticed big differences?

I would love to A/B the Flea 4 J and the Sonus or the Modulus VJ.

Possibly so, but who knows. :)
I only play 5'ers, and not much around touches a Q5 in terms of overall badass-ness! ;)
And I prolly got mixed up on the Zon stuff, as I really don't know their models, but what I was thinking of is more than likely the Legacy model, and there's been a good bit of comparisons between those and the Q5, with each camp seeming not to budge. :)
I've heard Status owners say that theirs are superior to Mods, but I just can't dig their look. The "butt" of the bass is too flat and the horns are almost even, which makes it look like a double-cutaway Les Paul! :p

I haven't played an S.H. before, and I know the shape is pretty similar, but still was just saying there probably/maybe was some sort of neck shaping changes or body mod changes, but I personally don't know.

Just that for ME, a Q5 is THE bass to have. :) Which is why I have a '94 on it's way from Florida as we speak!

And VJ's are so freakin' rad. I really want one, even though I have little use for 4-bangers, they're still SOOO nice!

Right on...

I do agree the Q5 is the shitzhah. Congrats on the incoming Q5. So your Q5 won't have the "truss rod" adjustment, much like a Zon. I almost prefer that as it makes set up that much easier :-)

Zon/Q5...yeah...all great. Splitting hairs. Comes down to a few personal preferences -- 34"/35", preferred pickup configurations, etc. Personally, I think the Legacy looks a little "unusual", but I have pretty trad tastes.

Um, you probably know -- but a 5 string VJ is rumored to be forthcoming isn't it?

Yep! Although the place I traded with JUST got in an '01 Q5 w/ bookmatched flamed maple top in trans red, with a chechen board and the Bart/Bart 3-band 18V that I wanted! We're talking like, today!
But I like having the older ones, so it's no biggie. :)

But totally agree- I just prefer the 35" scale (especially after having the Flea! the B is good, but nothing like the Q's!), and the big solid body. :) Makes me feel good! I'm a big guy too so I can move around on it.

It's going to be special. Even has the old-school font on the neck joint by the front pickup. Can't wait. :D

Oh and yeah I know they're busting out a VJ5, but I've yet to ever play a Fenfer-style 5 that I liked. Even had this killer maple/natural Lakland 55-02 that sounded great, but hated the way it played.
I hope the VJ5 will be different.

Dollars to donuts the VJ5 will have the same neck as the Flea 5...so...probably plays great :-)
