Fortunately, Sleepy, I have a great DI out of my Genz Benz Streamliner 900 head (tube DI). Live it sounds great and warm; done a bunch of outdoor gigs on the Cape this summer and fall and never failed to sound good. The sound guys love it.

If I had the $$ I would buy a Reddi tube DI (upwards of $800.00).

I played my Modulus thru a Sansamp for years at church. The soundman loved the signal it gave him. It's tough for me to say however since I was listening thru IEM and it sounded HORRIBLE to my ears. I could never dial in a tone I liked.

I've also owned the Avalon U5. I used it as both a preamp and DI. This sounded great in the house and great on stage. It's going to be a very clean uncolored sound. So make sure you're into that.

I also played a large mega-church conference in Orlando and this was the DI used by the church. The bass sounded HUGE in the room - like cannons going off. I'm sure that their sound system was mostly responsible for this but the Modulus going thru the U5 was certainly part of the power packed formula!

IMO the U5 is a much better pairing with your Modulus, according to my experience.

I love my Grace M103, but it's way above your price range. The M101 might be if you can find it used. Both of them have a huge low end without it being flabby. I'm not a fan of the DIs that include EQ and other bells and whistles, so my tendency would be to go for one of the better Radials. In the past I've used homemade DIs with Reichenbach transformers (they are very similar to the Jensens used by Radial) and they sounded quite good.

Avalons sound pretty good, too.

The aggie pre kills in this bass! Before, the highs seemed clanky and I could never dial in rich lo mids. The dip switches (on the EMG BT pre) didn't help. I'm really happy now. I was seriously thinking about selling this bass, glad I didn't. I'm lucky to have it.

I haven't been following the modulus club, but what the deal with a non truss rod neck? This thing hasn't budged in 15 years, should I be worried about it?

What does a guy have to do the get a number in this club?

Yeah, me too. My old band did some shows with ARU ca. 1992-93 and while I was blown away by Oteil's playing, the Modulus sound sort of turned me off. I heard it as being plastic-y. Fast forward to 1999 and I was listening to an ARU boot from those days and all of a sudden it clicked and I had to get that tone. It was beyond my budget, though. However, the next morning, I got an email from someone who wanted to know if I wanted a Q6 neck he had lying around. I jumped on it, Larry Pogreba cut out a body shaped piece of wood from a 100 year old mahogany door and routed for the neck pocket and pickups, Tye North hooked me up with some Lane Poor pickups, Harry Fleishman got me the hardware and after two weeks of furious sanding and finishing, I had the bass in the picture above. A wonderful example of manifesting an instrument from the universe, my total cost was less than $600. Coincidentally, Oteil did a clinic at a local music store a couple days after it was finished, so he got to check it out (and embarrass me by making me sit in in front of all the bass players of Colorado).

NICE! That reminds me a lot of my old Modulus sweetspot 6. I actually just found some old photos of that bass, and I need to make a point of scanning them just so I can show that bass off. It was definitely an eye-catching instrument. But I must say that I was never really a fan of that EMG BTS preamp.
