Modulus Mob

Has anyone had issues with Modulus service?

I have had one of my basses with Modulus for 6-7 weeks for service and I can't seem to get a return call or even an understanding of what work needs to be done.

Most of the time their voicemail is full and they never seem to answer their phone.

I was close to ordering a new Q6 and a fretless Q5, but I am starting to reconsider.

I love my Q5 and Q4, but this is starting to get crazy!

Am I just unlucky or is their customer service far from stellar?

Right now they are dealing with NAMM, so it will probably get better in a week or two. This can be a crazy time of year for all manufacturers.

Good point I guess, but NAMM shouldn't be an excuse to neglect customers for December (i get the holidays) and all of January.

In this timeframe, I have had conversations with MTD, Spector, Sadowsky and Fodera (today).

All cool in any case.... Just expect more from such a great manufacturer.

Modulus lack of customer service has been well documented. Due to their awesome instruments most of us forget about it. Yes it sucks, but Modulus is a relatively small operation and the guys that answer your calls and emails are the same guys building the basses, which is cool. I have had several conversations with Joe Perman....very nice, cool guy. Spoke with Anderson once or twice and he was the same.

I echo Sleepy's comments. Very small operation in NoCal but they do the best they can. Joe is a good guy and they have made improvements. Due to the NAMM thing, maybe you should hit them up on their Facebook page; I presume they will be updating things from the show in Anaheim and may be more plugged in that way (pun intended). Good luck.

Here is my Q5 Sweetspot. I hadn't done anything to it in 15 years so I decided to change the chrome hardware to back and I replaced the preamp with an aguilar OPB3. I think the black hardware makes it look more "stealthy". I'm gonna take some better pictures soon.

The aggie pre kills in this bass! Before, the highs seemed clanky and I could never dial in rich lo mids. The dip switches (on the EMG BT pre) didn't help. I'm really happy now. I was seriously thinking about selling this bass, glad I didn't. I'm lucky to have it.

I haven't been following the modulus club, but what the deal with a non truss rod neck? This thing hasn't budged in 15 years, should I be worried about it?

What does a guy have to do the get a number in this club?

Cool bass!!! It looks great either way!!! But the black hardware makes it look "classier"... :bassist::bassist::bassist:

A couple of questions for the Mob...

Does anyone know if Fender pickguards fit on a Modulus VJ? My Mod is rear routed and has never had a pickguard so I'm not worried about aligning the screwholes or the number of screws per se but I am concerned about neck pocket & pickup fit.

The second related question is, has anyone had a custom PG made for their VJ and did you send yours in for a tracing? If so can you tell me who you sent it to? I'm hoping they may still have it on file. Thanks!

As far as the neck pocket goes, the VJ is 2.50 at the 21st fret, so you should be okay there - maybe. The shape is a little different and the neck pickup may not be in the same location as a Fender.

I had http://www.terrapinguitars.com make mine earlier last year, but not sure if he would still have the tracing. Also Modulus, as far as I know does or did, makes all pickguards on a per bass basis so no two are exactly alike.

I've had a Q5 since the late 90s. It's still my main bass - love it. Sounds like no other and plays like no other.

I've got a problem however that I hope someone can help with. I got overzealous in lowering my action and filed the nut slots too deep. So now I have small slips of papers in there to prevent buzzing on open strings. I've tried to fill the slots with a compound of graphite powder and crazy clue which works fine for a little while but then eventually seems to wear away. Is there something else I can put into the slot that won't wear away so quickly?

Is the nut removable? It looks like it's part of the neck. I don't see a seem so I'm afraid to try to remove it. It if is removable, where can I get a replacement that's made of the same material?

Thanks Art, did you swap out the pre yourself, guitar repair guy or Modulus?
I had a 6 string Roscoe SKB w/ Bart / Aggie & I loved it.

You know, I can't remember. I either bought it like this or had it installed by Jack Read when he created the custom body for me...

Actually, the more I think about this the more I think Jack Read installed it. He was reselling lots of Aguilar gear at the time.

Hey Art, the link you posted is the same exact preamp I put in my modulus. The fodera standard preamp. I got a local luthier to put it in my quantum. It involved drilling two holes and addition of passive/active switch. But the difference is night and day... And if you are into the fodera sound you can REALLY get it from having this preamp in your bass. Peace

Thanks for your response KS. I printed up the PDF templates that Terrapin has on their site and the Fender pickguard seems to fit fine so I ordered an All Parts PG and am keeping my fingers crossed. If it doesn't fit right I can always return it.
