Woa what an awesome job they did. I had a brass nut made previously by a different shop. It sucked. The A string slot was too wide and caused it to rattle and buzz, Righteous was able to cut a new graphite nut with the plek. As well as pleking the frets and doing a killer crowning job. Plays beautifully, definitely recommend the plek if you can find one!

My Q5 needs a fret level, but I've grown to like the extra growl/buzz.

anybody ever seen a q5 with funk unlimited pickup specs like this? special customer order? modulus employee custom build? i dig it.

It gets a little confusing to me. You see, the Flea Bass and/or Funk Unimited basses were basically evolutionary throwbacks to basses we had already made in the past. So using a MM pick up and the Jazz pickup together was hardly a new thing to us. Nonetheless, it's hard to tell whether this is original or somebody could've easily modify the bass later.

Was it on there before? Usually means there’s something wrong with it. GC isn’t the best at the description

The pickups look off-kilter. Good luck getting 2900 for that.

I already bought this about 30m ago and called the store to confirm. I will be using the neck on my flea bass if anyone would be interested in all the rest lol
I remember ordering a brand new Modulus neck from Bass Northwest in Seattle for $550. I figure if Bass Northwest is making a profit off of the $550 then Modulus must be charging Bass NW maybe like $300-$400 or so.
Yeah but pre cbs fenders used to be 200 bucks too lol. They haven't sold just a neck in a couple decades. All in I spent 1625 shipped, pretty much just for a neck. I hope I can recover a little money selling body, hardware, electronics and case but I don't think there is a ton of value in that stuff. Unfortunately these necks are pretty much unobtanium now and the price you have to pay.
No, i didn’t buy it. GC had it up for sale before for awhile, someone eventually bought it and it made its way back there, but not right away…

I've officially placed an order for a new Modulus Funk Unlimited 4! I emailed Tony Cimperman at Planet Bass a week or so ago with an inquiry and he got back to me the next day. We traded emails back and forth, he was incredibly responsive and took a lot of time to answer all of my questions, with quite detailed replies. We ended up talking on the phone about 45 minutes last week and I placed the order. Tony was an awesome guy to talk to and it was a really cool experience, considering I've never ordered a custom bass before, much less talked to a builder.
A little bit of background and then I'll get to the specs, which I'm sure you all are more interested in. I'd been playing a Mexican Fender Jazz since high school and got my first job as an engineer in 2011. I saved up some money and drove down to Bass Central with the idea of purchasing an EBMM StingRay Slo Special (pre-special) or a Modulus they had picked out for me. I played and liked both - they guys down there told me "the StingRay is like a Corvette, the Modulus is like a Ferrari." I left with the Ferrari - a Modulus Funk Unlimited 4, SD pickup, Aguilar OBP-3 pre-amp.
I played the thing every day (installed a Legacy Lane Poor when they came out) and a couple years later bought a used Modulus VJ4 when news of impending bankruptcy hit. Eventually, I decided I needed a change and sold the Modulus basses - since, I've acquired (and still own) a Fender AVRI '63 P (flats), Fender AVRI '64 Jazz, a Fender USA Geddy Lee signature, and an Ernie Ball StingRay Special 4H. Obviously a different tonal palate.
All throughout the years, I've had the Modulus bug in my mind. With my second baby girl on the way, and with the blessing of my boss (aka my wife), I decided to take the plunge and bring a Modulus back into the fold.

- The body finish is the same as what I'd had previously. I looked at a ton of options, but kept coming back to this one (pics attached). In talking with Tony, they are going to try to match the previous finish.
- We discussed the Revolite option. Based on the specs, Tony anticipated the build to weigh about 8.5 lbs, which would come in right around my StingRay Special. I don't have problems with guitar weight (my Geddy must weigh 12-13 lbs, it's a boat anchor) and I guess I prefer a little bit more body/neck weight with an already bright bass in Modulus.
- A lot of recent Modulus basses have gone out with a satin neck finish. We discussed this, but I have a soft spot for gloss (the AVRI's are nitro gloss) and I like the way the KLD pops with it. Gloss doesn't really slow me down (the StingRay is 'satin-ish' as is the Geddy - I feel I play the same), so I went with that.
- For the pickup, the Legacy Lane Poor was the clear choice. In my previous FU4, I found it to be much more clear and transparent than the SD pickup, and even more so than the Bartolini that the VJ was loaded with.
- My only 'complaint' about my previous FU4 was the OBP-3 preamp. For one, I never knew what to do with the mid boost/cut control. I felt the bass had enough mids 'baked' in and any change I needed was slight at the amp or DI (SansAmp VT Bass DI / DI-2112). Even on my StingRay Special, I never really touch it from center. I also didn't like the boost/cut of the bass and treble - it seemed more 'on or off', rather than subtle tone shaping. As such, I went with the OBP-1.
- I upgraded the bridge to the BadAss II. It's just a tried and true bridge, what I had last time, and to me just looks cool.
