monitors on their bottom or side?

What makes a monitor able to be placed on its side? You can tell with certain monitors that the ports are on one side or angled wierd, are these the only type that can be placed on their side? Im pretty certain im getting the event asp 6's or 8's. The way the ports sit, it doesnt look like it should be placed on its side. Does this matter? For me its purely for looks, but i do think it looks cool. My thinking is that it does matter and i shouldnt do it, and i wont if it will make a difference. What do you guys think?

You can place monitors on their sides with no ill effect, I have done it in the past, although some manufacturers recommend upright placement for optimum monitoring (Mackie). I can't tell the difference myself, and as long as the monitors are ear level and properly directed I tend to think it is all good.

ok, i found out the answer so i figured i would post it so we all could learn. Its one of those things that most people probably wouldnt be able to tell, but a good audio engineer may. Basically it has to do with what axis the tweeter is on. If the tweeter is to the right or left of the cone your mix will change as you move your head back and forth. If the monitors are upright and the tweeter and cone are more parallel to eachother theres less chance that the mix will change do to your head moving. Ill probably say that this is most ideal but i agree with agreatheight, it probably wouldnt make that big of difference. I say this becuase in all the studios ive ever been i can think of at least half that break this rule. You NEVER see a pair of ns-10s upright. The tweeter is most certainly in a no no position according to the information ive read on the suject. I have mixed feelings on the subject, i guess ill do some intense testing when i get mine.
