Mono to stereo gubbins

My practise amp has packed in, so I've been playing through my computer's sound system for the last couple of days. I'm going bass -> effects pedals -> line in.

However, the bass only ever seems to sound through the left speaker. I presume this is because it's a mono signal and gets routed to the left channel when I plug it into the 6.3mm to 3.5mm converter jack.

Does anyone know of a method, or even a small application, which can make the signal play through both channels in realtime?

Using an appropriate program that incorporates a mixer you would simply assign the left input channel to both output channels. However, I can't think of a small utility program that would do this - but I'm no software guru or anything.

A hardware solution might simply be to wire a cable that connects the left and right terminals together, but this may cause (even more) impedance mismatches and other nastys.
