Montreal Tube-Amp Tech?

Following the advice of a couple of fellow forum members in this thread, I took my WT-800 to Mr. Tube.

Thanks to lomo and turcmic for their recommendations, Mr. Tube is indeed a class act.

If you live in Montreal and need an amp serviced, I highly recommend Mr. Tube. As long as I live in Montreal, I will never use anyone else.

I just found out two place that recones in quebec, solotech and belisle acoustic. I'm not sure yet if they can recone a vintage ampeg 810 speaker.
Any opinions on one of those shop?
Also, how's mf for tube amp service?

Amp-tek doesn't offer this service anymore.

Do you know who in Montreal could retolex my guitar amp?

For the guy looking for a speaker reconing for the SVT it's not worth it at all. Reconing is going to cost you more than replacing the speakers altogether. SVT speakers on fliptops.net are 33 bucks a piece or 240 for a set of 8. It'll cost you more money for reconing kits and labor to be reconed at a shop than popping in new speakers yourself.

For the guy looking to retolex his amp, don't be scared to do it yourself. Just take your time and it should be a breeze. Steamcomusic in Winnipeg have all colours of tolex and grillcloth for pretty good prices. Link Removed

Also if it's ever a possibility, I try and stay away from any tech's if I can manage myself. It saves them from getting backed up with small things. There's nothing worse than your amp blowing and you need to wait in a 3 week lineup for the good tech to fix it because he's busy doing basic setups on 200 guitars for 15 year old kids.


While I'm here, does anyone know some good stores to check out used gear in montreal? (Bass, guitar, amps, radios, organs, recording gear, microphones, etc.) Other than the obvious steves, italmelodie etc? I've seen a couple of pawn shops but not really anything else. I'm still fairly new to the province.

Try Mr Tube. He's located at Lutherie MF's shop on Guizot. Great guy and zero ********.

Lutherie MF is also a super all-around shop-they can do aqny custom build you'd want, or fix anything IME

Pat And Garfield at Hotel 2 Tango are great. Especially for quick fixes and re-bias. great with Traynors especially (IME) he's also done work on Valvetrains, Savages, Fenders Marshalls Vox even echoplex tape echo's

I've also heard great things about JM Ouillette just north of the 40 (a fender specialist) And Art Snow on the south shore is great with vintage Ampegs (fliptops especially) (but he's not cheap or quick)

I've heard great things about others as well but I'd prefer to answer PMs about them than review techs I either haven't used or heard first hand experiences about.:

Does anyone have first hand positive experience for Ampeg SVT-CL amps? the vietnameese ones? I just picked one up and I want to make it bomb proof.

thread is relevent to my interest since my tech recently moved off island to Vaudrieul.

after asking on facebook friends mentioned Musi-Tec in pointclaire and also Brokenheadstock. I thought Broken headstock outsourced most of their amp repair... :idunno:
I wouldn't mind getting in touch with Pat to get an Orange amp re-capped (@17 years old there's a low frequency ringmod type sound that's been coming from the amp lately)
I've also got an old Garnet Pro400 that needs to get back on its feet.
