Monumentally bad decisions

Have you ever made any really bad decisions that affect you for a long, long time. Two immeadiatly come to mind for me:
The first one was my deciscion to quit college after one year and become a construcion worker. For some people that might be a good decision but for me it was not. I was 18-years old and very strong but I have never been real mechanically inclined. Also I based that decision on this magazine cover and the article inside about Peter Fonda working construcion in South America. Sounded good a the time. I have learned that basing life changing decisions on magazine articles about celebreties is not a good idea. :p

My second bad descision was to keep hiking in the wilderness when I had fallen and screwed up my ankle. I only 3 miles in to a 15-mile hike and carrying a 60lb pack. I didn't want to go back and ruin anyone else's vacation. Can you say co-dependent boys and girls, say it nice. So I ended up hiking some very rugged terrain for a total of 27 miles. When I got out I found out my ankle was broken in 3 places. For the last 10 years I haven't been able to run or go on any long hikes because I don't have any cartiledge left in that ankle. I have learned from this and am not nearly as co-depent. That vacation is long over, my friends have gone on with their lives and I'm stuck with a gimpy ankle. I have also been able to practice forgiveness for some of them who encouraged me to go on. It was my decision not theirs.
Thank God for cycling and swimming. I still love the wilderness maybe I can find place to paddle in.
How about you, ever make any really bad decisions that still affect you?

Ah, I was under the impression that you were solo. Was this in the Sierra Nevada? Didn't you hiking partners notice you weren't 100%

Oh boy.
I was accepted to one of the finest colleges in the world. Unfortunately, I was extremely unprepared academically and emotionally. I ended up having a depression and drug induced mental breakdown that I am still recovering from 4 years later.

That one is going to haunt me the rest of my life...

Yes it was in the Sierra's. I know a beautiful place in the Emigrant wilderness. You go in at Pincrest and hike part of the way off the beaten path to a granite valley with a stream running through it. It is too high for mosquitos and there are trout in the stream. The best time is during a full moon. Not one else is around for miles.
Yes my friend saw I was in bad shape. We all thought it was a sprain.

Think about it I got lucky once, a bad decision that could of been a monumental catastrophe but turned out very very well. A year ago I basically moved to a new city for a girl, about two months after the move we were not together anymore. Could of been pretty bad, but being here in a different city at a different university gave me many opportunities. Turns out it was a good decision even if not for the right reason.

I dumped a loyal woman I didn't like very much, but who was in love with me so that I could be with a woman I thought I loved, but who was only interested in me for my money. I eventually married the parasite, and we had a kid. Then she left, we divorced, and I was pretty much her slave for a few years. Then she chose to take her own life, and I became a single dad to a little girl with very serious mommy issues.

Pretty much every choice I have ever made that involved a woman has been monumentally bad.
