Moogerfooger ring mod uses

My moogerfooger ring mod just arrived yesterday and the sounds it makes are totally ridiculous but I'm just not sure how I would use it in a band setting. I play in an experimental type rock group kinda like the mars volta(one of the reasons I got the pedal in the first place) and really have complete freedom in whatever sounds I want to make.

The pedal sounds really great with guitar and I know how I'd use it with that but I really want to use it more on bass and was just wondering how all you ring mod users do it in a band type setting.

first off the tremolo on this beast is stunning. mix at 10, set to LO, and freq at noon and below. turn all the LFO stuff to 0. that is a great tremolo tone that i find useful.

the ring mod tones are great for just crazy sonic mayhem and also musical noise. there's not one place or sound or time to use a ring mod, it sounds like demented robots, so when you feel like the song needs a demented robot bass, use it.

i love my moog ring mod :)

+1. I used the tremolo on mine in conjunction with a phaser on a cover of Lady Love by Robin Trower. Heavenly. and i use it for a purely effects pedal based mini-Krautrock thing.

Thanks for the tips, I'll definitely experiment with the tremolo a lot more.

Do you have some example settings you like to use when the Modulator is on the HI setting? And also, is there a way to have somewhat control over the pitch?

I'm gonna get the moog ep-2 expression pedal this weekend so I can get more control over the frequency level. Hopefully that will open some new doors :bassist:

If you split your signal and send one to the audio input, and the other to the Carrier In, the output will be 1 octave higher than the input; a distorted signal increases the effect, and ideally the signal going to the 'carrier in' should be boosted to line level, and the effect will be most noticeable in the higher fret, as is the case with other analog +octave's. If you have a pitch shifter with dual outputs, you can send your bass signal to the Audio input, and the pitch-shifted signal to the 'Carrier In' for different divisions. This is the closest you'll get to a 'tracking ringmod' with a stringed instrument.

With an MP201, you can use the Ringmod as a simple volume pedal in expression mode, as a tap tempo/midi syncable tremolo with the LFO's, VCA with gate/envelopes, etc. Unlike the majority of 'fooger CV inputs, a regular expression pedal does not work in the 'Carrier In' unfortunately, so you need an active control voltage to use it as a volume pedal/etc.

When using the Ringmod as a tremolo, try different 'Mix' settings; I've found that at around 4 and 6 on the Mix knob (no LFO necessary for this), different tremolo patterns are formed.

That sounds a little complicated for me as of this point but I'll look more into it once I get a better handle on effects.

I'm picking up an expression pedal this weekend and am excited to see what new sounds I can create with it :hyper:
