Double Bass Mooradian bag + cat pee = GRRRR.

... pretty much says it all.
I need a method for 100% restoration and odor elimination. The bass ('58 Kay) and the affected bag are on loan to me. I can't use it at all with any odor.
The bass is unaffected/unexposed.
I've searched other online resources, which have been conflicting (wash/don't wash, etc), or vague.

I don't know why you couldn't wash it. I'd put in in a bathtub full of warm water and laundry detergent, let it soak a bit then walk all over it for awhile. Drain and refill tub with plain water, repeat walking. Rinse again. Then hang it on a pole or something outdoors to dry, preferable in the sun.

Sorry for the cat trouble! A veterinarian recommended a product called "Nature's Miracle" for emergencies. I keep some on hand, but I've never had to use it- I have friends who have, and they report that it is in fact, miraculous! :D

As for the water, my Mooradian has been completely soaked by rain dozens of times over the years- it's going on twenty and it's still in great shape. When ever it gets wet, I take it off the bass, hang it up- preferably in open air and sunshine, and it's none the worse for wear.

Nature's Miracle is the best, although I saw several similar products at Target today. Natural enzymes break down the odor causing molecules. White Vinegar also works well, but then you have to wait for the vinegar odor to fade. We had an incontinent dog, so have lots of experience.

YOu have to be sure that the odor eliminator penetrates as far as the urine did - you may need to really soak it.

I don't think getting the bag soaking wet is a problem. The problem is getting it dry again. If you don't get it dry quickly enough it will get moldy and you will have an even worse smell on you hands. Your local laundromat may have an oversize washer big enough for the bag, and the spin cycle (don't use the fastest one) will remove enough water that it should air dry in a short enough time. I've had this issue several times and I simply machine washed with laundry soap and lots of white vinegar. Worked like a charm, and no vinegar smell once dry. If you can't access a big washer, the bathtub option should work. Just wring the thing out in lots of beach towels afterwards, and do it on a hot dry day. The dedicated products may work too, but I'm always skeptical of any product with the word "miracle" in its name:)

Been there. Ime just washing with soap or vinegar is not enough. The enzyme based pet-shop products do work, use them first and use a lot! Wash and rinse the whole thing afterwards in a bathtub. Getting it dry in a reasonable short time is a major challenge.

I picked up a kitten that I felt sorry for that was walking around the parking lot. Put it in the back of the jeep and smelled urine in the back after I took the kitten home I washed it and cleaned it a bunch and still smelled it on humid days for 14 years.

I have read that there are MUCH better cleaners now and some that employ proteins etc. to neutralize the smell.
I think the guys that suggested the cat places are right.

Must be nice to live in New Mexico, I bet they have less musquito's too.

I think the vinegar only helps when you're in time and the pee hasn't dried yet, otherwise it never worked well enough for me.

I had a beanbag when I was a lad. Cat peed on it. Never got the smell completely out, so the trash can solved that problem. For a place to sit, any amount of pee-smell is too much, especially cat pee. I wouldn't leave a bass in it for too long if the smell lingers... nobody wants to play a Pee-bass! HA!

I'm only three hours from you, so hot dry days are also scarce. My sister lives in Golden, Colorado. You can hang a hand-washed bath towel on the balcony there and it will be completely dry in about 45 minutes. But! The condo association where I stayed the last time I visited her absolutely forbids outdoor drying. The towel just hung on a plastic chair and still we got a complaint. Is that a one finger salute to the planet or what?
