Hey Fuzzy beard I live in Auora IN have you tried the bass cellar in cincy?I looked at all the local craigslist,Louisville,lexington,dayton,indianapolis and I find regularly some nice basses for around 500-1000 range if your patient.You said you have had a Framus. was that one on the cincy Craigslist for 700 some months back?

Hey Fuzzy,

I was in the same place you were several months ago. I had been looking for a DB for a while and really wanted to buy American. I have pretty strong feelings about not buying anything made in China if there is an option. With a budget under $2000 I found my options limited. At first I looked at Englehardts and also searched for the elusive "lucky find" deal on on old Kay, King, Am Standard, etc.

While looking for a bass I read everything I could and found a pretty solid consensus here that the Shens are superior to the Englehardts in general for tone and construction and many don't like the thinner necks on the Englehardts. This baffled me at first. Why wouldn't a thinner neck be an advantage on such a large instrument? After playing a bunch of basses though I agree.

My search ended when I found a Shen SB180 for a great price here in the classifieds. I didn't think I needed a hybrid since I play mostly Rockabilly, Bluegrass, Country, Blues, etc. and play about 50/50 slap/pizz and initially was looking for full ply like you but the price was right and the bass played and sounded great and the construction is obviously top notch. After putting new Silverslaps and a pickup on it it still didn't cost me any more than a new SB80.

What's the point of my ramble? Keep looking and your bass will find you eventually. Don't buy prematurely but keep looking hard so you can bring one home soon. The sooner you do, the sooner you are playing. You're welcome to try mine anytime if you get down to Louisville.

I've seen several in Indiana and Michigan on Ebay. Worth the drive from Cincy? Go Reds!

I seen someone say once before that buying a upright local can mean up to a 4 hour drive.lol


Shouldn't be that bad for me though I have 2 shops with in 30 min drive.

Hey everyone. Hey Fuzzy...good to see some Hoosiers looking for basses here! I grew up in Indy and now live and play in Nashville, TN. I have two basses that I got from Holmes Bass Viol in Milan, TN. Wayne does a great job setting up the basses and taking care of them after the sale. Among he, his wife and their daughter, they're great about working with you to get a bass back to the shop etc if it ever needs work. He gave me great deals on both my carved bass (on which he put a C-Extension that I've been very happy with) and on my plywood bass.

The funny thing about TB (and the internet in general) is that if you read enough posts, you can find something wrong with every instrument, bow and amp. My advise would be to try out EVERY instrument, even ones that are way out of your price range. Playing a few instruments above and below your budget may help you decide what you like and don't like. I wouldn't rule out driving 4 hours to try out a few instruments...just think how much time you've spent researching online.

I think my next mission is to try to find someone local with a upright that could show me a few things. No point in going shoping and trying things out if I have no clue at all what I am doing!
