More proof Rolling Stone Magazine knows nothing about music

What??? I'm a baby boomer and I can happily say that none of the artists and songs mentioned are on any baby boomer play list I'm aware of. I even contacted my boomer musician friends and peers and they haven't even heard of most of the artists selected this year. Springsteen's a given, but even most of us boomers are bored with him these days. If they have heard of the other artists, it's usually because their college age kids are into it. One buddy laughed, and said " Lordy my daughter listens to that awful, whiny, Oberst crap all the time. Drives me nuts!" Sorry but Rolling Stone hasn't been relevant with us old fart boomers since maybe when Bill Clinton was running for president. I quit reading it by 91. They quit marketing to boomers a long time ago. I'd not miss the rag if it went onto the ash heap of pop culture history.

Sad 25 bands or musicians and i only heard of 3 or 4 and would Never consider them for top 25 of anything. But can you really expect any more from RS . The problem with being a baby boomer is the bar was set pretty high for music. in my opion the music that came out back then not only changed music ,but it helped change the world.timeless music that was made in turbulent times. not likely that we will see something like that happen again in my life time. RS- come on ***

As I stated earlier, I believe this to be true. But if you follow country music at all, you will notice that she (Miranda Lambert) doesn't get much airplay or video play. Just goes to show......

It is really hard for me to listen to mainstream anything nowadays.

READ MY NOTES AND GIVE THESE BANDS A CHANCE.

I actually thought the list for the publication was pretty legit.
Starting from the top...with a few notable mentions

1. U2 had a pretty crazy tour this year and and eh album for them. I don't see them taking one, but that's not my call.
2. Jay-Z scores his first number 1 hit off the new album and in general I believe with this song and it was everywhere. The Yankees Anthem etc. Pretty legit choice.
3. Phoenix put out one of my favorite albums of the entire year. The record came out, my band was on tour, and Phoenix was all we listened to :) It was Phoenix breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner haha.
4. Dirty Projectors had one of the most captivating live shows this year and a great album to go with it. I believe The Roots even invited them to play alongside after seeing them perform on Fallon.
5. Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Wilco, Avett Brothers all put out great albums this year and never disappoint.
6. Animal Collective hailing from my hometown :) Woot Woot! Big ups to MD! Took No. 1 on almost every indie publication out there for their album Merriweather Post Pavilion. And I must say so myself, the record is incredible and "My Girls" is the jam.
7. Both Bat For Lashes and Peter, Bjorn and John put out incredible records and I can easily see how they both made the list.

I think Rolling Stones did a pretty great job this year.
I'm in disbelief that a ton of you stated you don't know anyone on this list.

WILCO?!?!?!? How could you not know Wilco...signed to a major, major didn't put out one of their records, they bought the rights back and an imprint using the same major's distro signed them and released the record that went on to go gold. (I believe that's how the story goes).

Everyone must check out Wilco, Phoenix, The Avett Brothers, Dirty Projectors, and Animal Collective. IMHO it will be doing yourself a music favor.

I've seen one of her videos and I have read things about her. She appears too authentic, original and talented to be mainstream.

really? that's unusual. I'm 45 years old and have heard every one of them. I could understand john q public not hearing them but you are posting on a musical forum so I am assuming that you have somewhat of an interest in music.

Are we supposed to be impressed by the fact that you have heard of these songs? Many of us enjoy music that is a bit more out of the mainstream.

Keithpas...most of those bands are not mainstream, top 40, do not get radio play etc. Most are of the indie wave coming through the states that are notable for being legit musicians that put out great records. One can not deny a good song.

Actually that is probably one of the best lists that RS has put together in years. The Miley song is a stupid choice, but most of the other stuff is at least legit music. As for Lady Gaga, you might not like her, but she is pushing pop music forward like no one else since MJ left the scene. I, for one, cannot stand her lyrics, but she has mad talent.

Way back in 1987 I made a concerted effort to really keep my finger on the pulse of what current hit music was all about: I listened to top-40 radio whenever I was in the car, I watched MTV religiously (this was back when MTV actually played music videos), I read Billboard and Rolling Stone and some other pop music trade papers... my reasoning being, I'm a professional musician, therefore it must be in my best interest to be keenly aware of what's popular & selling well.

Ya know what I found out?

Having a good ear & a keen imagination trumps being familiar with what's popular 100% of the time.

Nowadays if I'm at a session and the producer says "play me something like a Black Eyed Peas feel" I just say "hum me a few bars of what yer looking for" ...then I give him what he wants. If I have a gig where I know the setlist in advance, I do some homework: listen to those tunes & transcribe 'em. If I'm actually on a gig and someone calls out a tune I've never heard of -- and there aren't any charts -- I play something that works with what the rest of the band is doing (because, y'know, I'm a professional musician, remember) and don't give a hoot whether it's what the bassist on the original recording did.

And meanwhile, my quality of life is infinitely better than it was back in the late 80s because I'm not listening to top-40 radio, watching MTV religiously, or reading Billboard and Rolling Stone. And when i want to check out new music I don't have to feel restricted to that which sells.
