More proof Rolling Stone Magazine knows nothing about music

I had some extra time on my hands Christmas day, so I ended up putting more thought into a post than I might usually do. The result is that I got way more responses to a post than I'm used to. To anyone who was amused, I'm glad you found it amusing. However, I wasn't even trying to be funny; I was just speaking my mind. If anyone was offended by what I said, especially about Bruce Springsteen, then I didn't really want to offend. I guess criticizing Bruce Springsteen may be more of a taboo than I had realized. I can't think of any other major musical figure that I would be so openly critical of. It certainly wouldn't be the Beatles; I'm a Beatles fan.

You guys need to learn to have respect for new music. Sure most of the stuff on there is hipster garbage but artists like girls animal collective and Lady Gaga are getting inotnew sonic territory it may not be your cup of tea but you have to respect it. Part of being a musician is being open to ALL the music around you and appreciating it even if you dont like it.

I DO look at Billboard (on-line) to see how my work (the stuff I record/mix/master) is charting/selling . . . but I don't feel ANY obligation to "keep up-to-date" as to what's "popular" anymore . . .

I just have a good time playing bass with Haragan y Compania (and on Joan Sebastian produced CDs) and making more "hits" . . .



AND "misses" . . . :cool: . . .

really? that's unusual. I'm 45 years old and have heard every one of them. I could understand john q public not hearing them but you are posting on a musical forum so I am assuming that you have somewhat of an interest in music.

Actually for 45 you're more of the exception then the rule. I'm 45 and have not listened to any of those songs as well. I do know who most of those bands are however. it seems the older you get the harder it is to find good mainstream music.

I completely agree BS. I've got a house full of teenagers so that keeps me somewhat current.

At least half the stuff is not the usual mainstream pop stuff. Some of these names are great bands/artists that actually do it because they love the music they make (or at least sound like it).

Some good names:
Frans Ferdinand
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Wilco
La Roux
Miike Snow
Animal Collective

The reason you guys don't know these names is because they are new (had a release in 2009) and not the usual top 40 pop stuff.

Didn't know RS was still around. I let my subscription run out years ago. I got tired of their left wing propaganda and Jimi Hendrix constantly being voted the greatest guitarist of all time.

Also, great to see Bat For Lashes and the Yeah yeah yeahs represented; two very entertaining groups who should be heard by more people. I'm a bit disappointed not to see any mentions of Paramore, though; they write and play their own music, and the lead singer doesn't need autotune or overdubs to give a fine performance. How many popular bands can say the same?

Springsteen is a good songwriter; if people would just stop trying to compare him to Bob Dylan (voice and all!) I wouldn't really have a problem with his popularity.

And U2 - they were a musical, interesting pop band back in the 80s, but their last half dozen albums pretty much have nothing for me on them. They've become a brand instead of a band and it saddens me.

With Jann Wenner at its head(what kind of name is JANN??), Rolling Stone will always be a joke. But it's not surprising when you consider that he's also the founder of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and allowed ABBA and Madonna to be inducted before Alice Cooper, Rush, KISS, and many others for God sakes.

I have heard of most of these bands, and one or 2 have a song I kinda like. But I can also ignore them and still not feel musically bereft.

Uh...finally The Stooges got in. But that's part of the reason the whole Hall of Fame thing, like 'best of' lists never please most folks anyway.

Since when did rock music earn the respect to have a Hall of Fame? You know it may be time to blow the whole industry up when we're debating these kinds of topics. Rock was supposed to be the anti-establishment thing...well until the corporate types found out they could sell soap in between the songs.

AH! Rock is a corporate entity like EXXON or Halliburton. So much for rebellion!:rollno:
