I do not doubt for one minute that the crowd enjoys the song. People request it all the time, and we just don't play it because none of us feel that we can do it justice. I personally have heard way too many trios/quartets with the standard "one tone overly distorted bar band" guitar player massacre this song. It's a pet peeve that I have about Sweet Home Alabama, and I refuse to play it because we can't do it justice. I'm sure we could pull it off and people would like it, but I'd get no joy from it.
However, that doesn't prevent me from hacking out a version of Gimme Three Steps. People dig it and I don't feel bad about stomping that song into the ground.
I agree with the Man In The Box, we did it for 2 years and it was never that good...wee just replaced it a few months ago with "It Aint Like That"....and we tear that up.
Worse cover I have ever seen...would have to be a band I saw do "Sober"...horrible, My band does it "good" but most don't put the the effort in to make it "right".
The most impressive, I saw an acoustic act do Primus - "Jerry Was A Racecar Driver" I wish I had video to share, just thinking about how good it was gives me a shiver and I'm not even that big of a Primus fan.

I grew up in North Vancouver, BC (Canada). Heart played a couple of my high school dances (yes, I know, I'm old). They did an amazing cover of Stairway to Heaven; even handled the harmonized recorder parts in the intro. I still remember it vividly more than 30 years later.billjr said:

The female singer in my band does a HUGE!!! version of "sweet chile o mine" We worked a hybrid version of GNR and the Sheryl Crowe versions.If you want to see a whole pub rockin', do this song.

The Gambler by Kenny Rogers.Pubs in my home town have banned bands from playing this one.....thank God!

You see, at the local stage there was a acdc tribute night, so a lot of local bands were asked to play certain acdc songs...
imagine that, if the singer nowadays can't even reach that pitch live, WHO CAN??

There was a band my group of friends used to follow that had three different guitarists, and not ONE of them could get the lead part of Bow Wow Wow's "I Want Candy" right. Right rhythm, wrong notes. Ugh.

Part of being a cover band is arranging parts to suit your instrumentation. My old cover band was me, guitar, singer, and drums. On most songs we were short at least a guitar and on songs like sweet home alabama we would've needed about 6 more people in the band to sound like the original. I'll admit that some songs were a bit thin (Livin' on a prayer comes to mind, but the crowd sings that one for you anyway), but for the most part we pulled it off just fine.
*As an aside, there is a led zeppelin tribute band called Zoso that does sound like led zeppelin.

You are so right plus the fact that most people are drunk and not analyzing everything you do. The band will realize mistakes more so then a bunch of drunk bar people. I don't think most people expect the songs to sound exact as long as it is a good version plus a cover band covers many different bands so what
more can you ask for.
