...some of you sound like you would go to a led zeppelin show and chastise them for not sounding like led zeppelin.

I went to a Zeppelin show. Plant cheated on all the high stuff. And this was back in the day!
(It was a great show anyway!)

...most people are drunk and not analyzing everything you do. The band will realize mistakes more so then a bunch of drunk bar people.

+1 And a good thing too! Most non-musicians, drunk or not, don't have the capacity to pick up on most booboos. Presumably, their talents lie in other areas.

Wow, I didn't realize that bands were covering Painkiller. Breaking the Law and Living After Midnight are pretty much standards for rock covers, but didn't know that Painkiller was universal enough to play in a bar.

Yeah´down here in Colombia it´s quite an anthem.
Several bands try to play it and they just can´t do it.
Once while rehearsing with my band the drummer start to play the intro and a bunch of guys were like "Ohhh, That´s painkiller" we didn´t play it but it was fun to see this people amazed with my drummer´s skills.

Is it possible to play that song WRONG?

It isn't wrong if your ears doesn't work. Most bands hack that to the point of they should be ashamed. Including mine.

It is requested it gets played.

That tune in the Juke box will cost you a dollar to play.


Let's get off the originals vs. covers deal. Play what you want and enjoy it.

As far as sounding just like the CD, most people just want the general vibe of the tune with the words sung correctly. A bass players work is here, trying to keep a familiar rythm and sound. A decent attempt at the solo, and don't try to go off too much into your own La-La land when "making it your own".
