Joe Comfort. Listen to his work on the Sinatra sessions (e.g., Songs for Swingin' Lovers) recorded in the mid fifties. His intonation in the upper register is impeccable.

I am fairly certain he studied the double bass in school. What is impressive is how well be maintains his intonation while touring so much on bass guitar.
