Gigging amps are better with a well designed EQ. Rooms and cabs need a little adjustment on the amp. I don't see it as changing MY tone. This is why I got away from Eden style EQs, which I used to love.

I've settled on the GK 400 and 800 RB for three reasons. First, The 1 Mohm input makes pickups sound great. Second, the natural tone of the amp is what I'm looking for. And lastly, the 4 band EQ is simple, musical, and well designed for making gig or rehearsal space specific adjustments, especially with the bass knob, which seems set perfectly for supplementing deep depth in a big absorbent room or pulling out room boominess in a hard walled or small space.

I think that's what EQ used to mean-- EQUAL-izing the output to adjust for cab or room issues, rather than radically sculpting what comes out of your fingers into something else.

I'm with you on making the effort to use technique rather than technology. Picking closer to the bridge does the same thing as turning down a bass knob, doesn't it?

+1 I assume that the OP is going to use the amp for practice where he knows there are no problems with the room. I used a volume only preamp into a power amp at one jam space. It worked great since I knew the room had no serious EQ problems. I would only gig with that out of desperation if all my other amps where broken
